Courtney vaulted the low barrier, sprinting towards his teammates car. Smoke was already curling up from the undercarriage. He ducked his head, and dug deeper.
Keiran was fumbling with the buckle as he arrived. Courtney reached down and took it from him, pressing the release. It held firm.
Keiran reached up to his helmet, unclipped and lifted it over his head. He tossed it to the side.
"Where the hell are the stewards?" he yelled.
Courtney looked over towards the pits, but couldn't see any movement.
"They're on their way," he lied.
Courtney gripped the top right strap, and tugged hard while pressing the relase. It broke free.
"Only three more to go now, mate." he said. He could feel the wamth on his shins.
He yanked the second strap, but it held firm. He tugged it left to right, and it popped loose.
"Where's all the help?"
Courtney looked across to the pits. He could see red jackets sprinting towards him, fire extinguishers in hand.
"Not far now," Courtney smiled. He started work on the buckle again.
"Should have been you stuck in here, you know." Keiran said. "I never should have agreed to race in this rustbucket."
Courtney took a deep breath, and continued working the straps free. He could feel the material of his trousers sticking to his legs.
For a moment, everything stopped, a fraction of a second of unnatural stillness. Flames licked round the engine then burst around the teammates, throwing the car and Courtney into the air.
