Even though this specific bug was so tiny that Tom probably would just barely feel it (if he felt it at all), he still felt more comfortable putting his shoes on before getting rid of it. So, he walked over to grab them.
Josh tried to call for him to come back. His chances of getting help were decreasing the father Tom walked from his location. Of course, no matter how loud or how much Josh yelled, Tom couldn't hear him. Josh saw him putting his shoes on in the distance and assumed he was leaving the house, but the truth was much worse.
Josh watched in confusion as Tom walked back to where he was. Tom looked down, trying to find the speck he saw a minute ago, and smiled when he eventually spotted it. Then, he slowly lifted his foot over the little "bug."
Josh immediately knew what was happening. Tom did see him, but probably thought he was a bug, and was now trying to step on him.He started running as fast as he could, but the shoe was utterly massive and he didn't know if he could make it. He didn't want it all to end like this. He couldn't let that happen. As he kept running, he was screaming for Tom to stop. In response, the giant's foot kept lowering. It was falling very slowly, like Tom was trying to deliberately terrify his victim as much as possible.
As Josh desperately tried to escape, he wondered why Tom even wanted to kill him. Josh already didn't agree with people immediately killing every insect they saw in their home. He could understand why some people were afraid of large ones and wanted them out of their house (though he preferred just putting them outside). But him? He was literally smaller than an ant, and it wasn't like there were hundreds of creatures his size in his house. He was the only "bug" in that area. Tom just happened to notice him because he glanced down and saw Josh's minuscule form moving around. Tom could just barely see him and probably wouldn't even notice him most of the time, making it very hard for Josh to bother him in any way if he stayed in his house. And if he was so bothered by such a tiny creature living somewhere in his house, why didn't he just take him outside?
Really, Tom just liked killing bugs sometimes for some reason. And as far as Tom knew, Josh was no different than any of the other insects he's seen. Even if he did know that it was actually Josh, Tom might have tormented him anyway, considering Tom really disliked the various pranks Josh came up with years ago (before he became more interested in science) and probably wanted revenge on him.
Tom started lowering his foot even faster now, and at this point, Josh was almost certain that he couldn't escape.
