Josh couldn't do anything but curl up and try to cover himself as much as possible as Tom's foot rapidly came down. Even though he tried to protect himself, he had a feeling that it wouldn't be enough. That he'd die like this, with no one ever knowing what happened to him.
Tom's enormous shoe then crashed into the ground with extreme force, shaking the ground and deafening Josh. Everything went dark for Josh, but after a few seconds, he realized that he was still alive. Was his attempt to protect himself actually successful? It did help this time, but if he was bigger, he would have been flattened instantly. But since he was so tiny, he ended up between the grooves of his shoe without being injured too badly.
Then, everything was illuminated again as Tom lifted his foot and placed it down behind Josh, causing another earthquake. Josh's head was hurting now and the entire experience was horrifying, but now was his chance to escape. He wasted no time in running in the opposite direction. He didn't know where he'd end up yet, he just needed to get away from Tom and find a safe place.
