Sandra Dixon looked out the window at all the people walking to and fro across the campus. A week ago, she thought, I was one of those people.
And she had been. The previous week, she was a med school student, on her way to a promising career. Then, she had started to feel ill, like she might be coming down with something.
One big sneeze later, she began changing into the cartoon character she now was.
Toonmonia was the diagnosis; a peculiar new disease that had started to spread. She and other toons were quarantined here at the campus hospital, while others searched for a cure.
"Good afternoon, Sandra."
Sandra turned, and saw Dr. Priya Banji, who had been her instructor before the plague hit. After working so closely with her, it was still something of a shock to see her wearing PPEs. "Good afternoon, Doctor. So, what do you think? Can I get out of here soon?"
Dr. Banji shook her head. "I'm sorry, Sandra. But there are two reasons we don't want to let you go. Firstly, like the others with your disease, you are still contagious. Look around you: the interior of this room has been... toonified."
With a start, Sandra realized that the doctor was right: everything in the room, except for the doctor, was rendered in the same style Sandra was. She had known the plague could change people, but she had never even suspected that it could alter the very fabric of reality.
"Our second reason for keeping you," the doctor continued, "is because we want to know why your mind hasn't been altered by the plague yet. With the other patients, their minds have been altered to fit their new genre within moments of transformation. However, your tests indicate that, mentally, you're still the same person you were when you were studying here, even though you are now _____________."
