Chapter #4

What's a "meta-human" ability?

Vanessa tapped the “Mental” menu and scanned the options there. Most of them seemed to be the sort of thing you would use to adjust someone else’s personality (if that were possible), but she did see an option for IQ which told her her current score was 115. She went ahead and upped her intelligence a bit to 130.

She didn’t really find much else of interest in the “Mental” category so she tapped the “Misc.” menu. Now THIS was more like it. She scrolled through a myriad of options ranging from ordinary to impossible. She skipped past the duller options like piercings and tattoos and continued down until one option caught her eye. It said “Meta-Human Abilities.”

“What the heck does that mean?” Vanessa asked tapping the selection. Her eyes went wide when she saw what was listed. “Ok, there’s no way this is real.” The list that appeared contained various superpowers of nearly every type she could think of. Energy blasts, flight, telekinesis, and many many more. At the top of the list was a note that read, “Due to the fragile nature of human DNA no more than 3 abilities from this list can be activated at one time.”

At every step it seemed as though whoever programmed this app really believed it would work on real life people, and every step of the way Vanessa believed it more and more in spite of the fantastic nature of the abilities she saw here. She looked through trying to narrow her selections down to just three superpowers that she would want. Finally she decided that, if this this really did work, she’d be able to change her mind later. First she clicked on flight having always dreamed of being able to soar above the ground like a bird. Next she picked super-strength. She, just like Laura, envied Greg’s muscles and the power they brought. After selecting the strength enhancement a slider appeared labeled “Strength Factor Multiplier.” Below the slider, which was set all the way to the left it said “10 X Avg. Human.” As she began moving the selector to the right began increasing the number. She continued to move up until it read “50,000 X Avg. Human.” There was still a lot of slider remaining, but the level’s of power they opened upon scared her a little so Vanessa decided to hold here for now. Should she want an increase later she knew how to get it.

For her third power she scrolled up and down the list a few times before settling on pyrokinesis. In the end it was the unnatural flaming red hair color she had previously selected that got her to decide on the ability to create and control fire. Plus she liked the idea of thinking that her new body was so incredibly hot that it could burst into flame.

Satisfied with her superpower selections she pressed the “Done” button at the top of the screen which caused a pop-up screen to appear. It read, “Because of your selection of pyrokinesis we would recommend a flame-proof clothing layer. Go to ”Costume Selection?”

Curious about the increasingly strange options that were appearing Vanessa tapped the “Yes” button and was returned to the screen that showed the full body model of her gorgeous enhanced sexuality. Now, however there were arrow buttons on either side of her body and when she pressed them her body was encased in various “super hero” outfits of differing styles starting with rather basic leotards which continued to get skimpier and wilder. Each of these were black, red and yellow and colored to look like flames.

The virtual Vanessa was now wearing a pair of black leather boots with 6”, stiletto heels. The remainder of her body was covered with thin straps of latex that were connected, but just barely. Her left leg was entirely bare, as was her right arm, her stomach and all of her back and chest above her enormous breasts. The globes in question were covered by a lick of flame that was born of the suit that ran the left side of her waist and wrapped around her shoulder and left arm. Her bosom was covered, but once the fabric reached her right nipple it stopped leaving nearly the entire sphere of her right breast exposed. She spun the figure around and was not surprised to find the costume covered nothing on her back except for a line of latex less than an inch thick that spanned the distance from hip to hip and an even smaller string that bisected the hemispheres of her glorious butt.

Happy with her costume choice Vanessa again tapped the “Done” button and was confronted with yet another pop up question: “Would you like to make this template an ”Alter Ego?“” An info box below gave the definition of this term: “An alter ego allows you to appear as yourself until you wish to transform into your superpowered, enhanced body. Transformations are performed at will.”

Vanessa shook her head. “These people thought of everything. I can be a total superhero... or villain.” She chose “Yes” and, when prompted to enter a name for the superhero template decided on the name “Wyld Fyre.”

Her finger then moved slowly toward the “Apply” button. “Please, please, please, please,” she whispered hoping that she wouldn’t feel silly in a few seconds if nothing happened.
