It is a Thursday afternoon. Katie is in her last class of the day and the ending bell is about to ring. She sits impatiently in her chair, waiting for her teacher to dismiss everyone. "Alright class, I will see you tomorrow," says Mr. Hearst politely. Katie jumps out of her seat and flies out the door. She is excited because today is the day she is supposed to get her spell book in the mail. Now, there is a small part of her that thinks the book could be a fake, but for now, she is trying to think positive. Katie only lives about a five minute walk away from her high school, so she quickly heads home.
Katie has the typical American family and lives in a three bedroom house. She argues with her parents occasionally, mainly due to the fact that they "just don't understand her". She gets along with her mother decently and tends to pick on her sister. Her father is usually the mediator for all of this and ends most situations by telling everyone to "knock it off". Her mother has a part time job while her father can easily work 50 hours a week.
Katie reaches her house and quickly goes inside. "Mom! Did anything come in the mail for me?" "Yeah, you did get a package today. What did you order?" asks her mother. "Oh, just a book," says Katie as she picks up the box. Katie then goes to her bedroom with the box and closes the door behind her. She passes her sister's room along the way and can hear loud blaring music playing. She sits down on her bed with the package and opens it up. Inside, she finds a fairly large book with a leather cover on it. The writing on the book is very fancy and a little difficult to read. Katie opens the book and begins to read it. The pages on the inside also have the fancy writing, but it appears to be in English. She soon finds the page she is looking for and it is titled shrinking and growing spells. "Cool, it really has them," thinks Katie as her heart beats a little faster.
After spending several minutes looking at the book, Katie finds that in order for the spells to work, they have to be read out loud just right. Her attention is on the shrinking spell as she thinks about what to do with it. She imagines shrinking her sister and chasing her around the house. Then she wonders what it would be like if she shrunk herself. Since she was younger, Katie has had a fascination with stories or TV shows that involve someone changing size. Katie also learns that the spells can affect people living no further than two blocks away. As Katie looks over the words for the shrinking spell, she begins to wonder how small it makes a person. After another few minutes of letting her imagination run wild, Katie decides to read the shrinking spell out loud. Next,
