Turns out, contacting Earth wasn't a smart move. With humans being...well, humans, or at least with those known as Atlanteans, they mistook the wolves as a threat and shot down their ships with interstellar missiles. This caused them to crash in various parts of the world, the ship's radioactive fuel leaking into the water and soil, effectively destroying crops and drinking water supplies. Long story short, within a couple decades, the Earth no longer resembles what it once was, looking more like something from a cheesy movie about the end of the world, except it's actually real.
The survivors of the wolf ships that crashed formed their own clans to survive, as did the humans. Both species blame the other for what lead to this situation, and eventually so much time has passed that nobody even remembers for sure who is really to blame. All they know is in this new, desolate world, the only thing that matters is survival, by any means necessary.
In the wake of the crashing ships and their leaking fuel, some humans and wolves that had been exposed directly to the fuel began to mutate into monstrous shadows of their former selves. Some kept their sentience, while others became mindless beasts. These mutants are reviled by humans and wolves alike, and the ones that are still intelligent are outcasts from both societies.
