Chapter #5
Sofia has the ring
by: Unknown
Surrounded by her group of mercenaries, Sofia picked the ring up from its pedestal and held it up to the light.
“The ring of Meur. Behold, gentlemen.”
“And how do we know that it’s the real thing? The boss isn’t gonna be happy if we bring him nothing but a fancy jewelry piece.” The lead mercenary said, eying the ring skeptically.
“I’ve studied everything there is to know about this ring” Sofia replied, “Believe me, it’s the real thing.”
“I don’t believe it” The man growled, “for one thing, this was way too easy to f-“
He was cut off in mid-sentence as his body abruptly shrank into his parka, disappearing from view. The other men followed suit, their clothes falling to the floor until there was only Sofia left standing in the middle of a pile of empty parkas.
Sofia smiled, looking down at the ring now placed on her index finger. A mouse crawled out of the clothing that had belonged to the man that questioned her.
“Proof enough for you?” she asked, laughing as the tiny creature struggled to comprehend what had just happened.
“Now we all know this is real. And what’s more, the boss only needs to pay me half your salaries, in addition to my fee, in order to retrieve it.”
Raven was shocked by this turn of events. It was one thing to hear about a ring that could alter reality at the whim of its wearer, but nothing could have prepared her to actually see it being used on anyone! It would be impossible to take on Sofia like this, she decided. Her best bet was to wait until the woman let her guard down, which was bound to happen sooner or later. Raven just hoped Sofia would make a mistake before handing the ring off to whoever she was working for.
Sofia departed the crowd of squeaking mice that had once been her fellow mercenaries and began making her way out of the cave and to the surface. Raven could only hide in the shadows and hope desperately that Sofia didn’t notice her. Given their history, Raven knew if she was caught right now she would probably not be lucky enough to get away with spending the rest of her life as a mouse, and she couldn’t help but feel a bit afraid of the possible consequences that her failure on this mission would bring.
