You were an adventurer and your mother knew it. She also knew that you were a huge fan of mysteries. It was those two factors that moved her to decide to use you in a test on Hannah. There was a young adult mystery book she loved called, 'The reluctant Princess.' It just so happened that it was your favorite as well because you had not yet solved the mystery. The story was about a young boy who was magically transformed into the young princess and begged by the Queen to masquerade as her daughter, who had gone missing, until the real princess could be found and the kidnappers brought to justice.
The reason you could not solve it was because the story ended at the thirtieth chapter, just before everything was about to be revealed. You had searched for the other part of the book but in vain.
"He is going to love this, once he understands." thought mom, hopeful.
To her delight, when you found yourself wearing the same princess dress pictured in the book, you let out a laugh that threatened to shake the room.
"Okay, mom!" you said. "I believe you, you're a witch!" you looked at yourself again then added, "Interesting choice of clothing, though. Mel and Hannah will get a good laugh out of it."
"Actually, I was hoping you can help me with a test, John." said mom. "she paused. "How would you like to go into the book and try to solve the reluctant princess mystery first hand... by being the princess?"
You looked at mom, your eyes dancing. "Are you telling me that you can put me INSIDE the story?" you asked.
Mom nodded and you suddenly became worried. "When will I be brought back?"
"When either you solve the mystery, Hannah discovers that you are actually the princess, or you reach the thirtieth chapter of the book." replied mom. "If you agree, I will be reading the book to Hannah, one chapter a night, until one of the three conditions are met."
"Thirty days, at the most." you said.
"No more than that, John." said mom. "I swear it."
"What if I get hurt in there?" you asked.
"You will feel it." replied mom. "But you will be protected by the magic of this book, you will not die and you will return from the book, thirty days at the latest, and I will restore you to normal." she paused. "I know you love an adventure and a good mystery, that is why I picked this test. Will you help?"
You thought about for a moment then nodded. "Okay, I'm game." you said. "But, I will need three wishes granted to me in the book to help me along."
"I will do a little rewriting so the king will grant you three requests through out the book." promised mom. she took the book from the shelf. "Are you ready to enter this mystery?"
You nodded and mom opened the book before sliding it across the floor to you. To your surprise, the book slid right under your shoes so that you were standing on it. Then the book glowed and you began to sink into it!
"I'll see you in thirty days, if you don't solve the mystery or Hannah passes my test." said mom.
"Don't forget what you promised mom!" you called back, before waving good bye.
"I won't." said mom, waving back.
Seconds later, you had completely vanished into the book and it stopped glowing. Mom picked up the book and closed it before rubbing the cover, thinking of you. She was happy that you were so adventurous as there were many more tests to come.
"Don't worry, John." she said, although you could not hear. "I promise you that I will get you out of there in thirty days, no longer, and you will get those three wishes granted."
She then took the book upstairs to Hannah's bedroom, where she found her getting ready for ballet class. "I thought we might read the reluctant princess, one chapter a night, to help you sleep, Hannah." she said.
Hannah smiled. "Okay, mommy." she said. "Maybe we can solve the mystery this time."
Mom smiled. "Maybe."
indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
