Chapter #4
Propose a deal with the sect
by: Unknown
You approach the front gates with as much confidence as you can muster. This little charade was entirely dependent on your ability to stay calm and focused; one small slip-up could alert the wizards that you were up to no good, and you didn't intend to test their wrath. The massive gates were lined with the same sort of arcane runes as the rest of the building, and led directly into a small foray built at the bottom of the structure. You were certain that the wizards already knew you were coming - their divining magics were likely watching every move you made.
Your suspicions were confirmed as the ornate gate began to open inwards, even before you had reached it! The darkness behind the doors contrasted with the bright sunlight streaming in. But even as you slowed your pace, you could sense a tingle of magic in the air. Doubts about this whole scheme were growing large in your mind... if these magic users were truly as powerful as the locals said, maybe you should back off while you still could.
"Welcome, wanderer," said a strangely harmonic voice from within the darkness. You thought it was feminine, yet an odd resonance to the words gave you pause.
"Uh, greetings, Mighty Wizard..." you replied to the unseen speaker. "I would like to propose-"
"An alliance?" replied the voice, a hint of a giggle behind it. "A deal? A pact?"
You tried to squint into the darkness, but you could still see nothing. "Yes... something like that, anyways."
The voice was silent, as if deep in thought. Moments passed, and yet you remained still, fearing the worst. Perhaps their divining magics had already revealed your true intentions? Perhaps these wizards were discussing how best to dispose of you? These and other fears pervaded your thoughts as you stood in front of the ornate structure. A tiny voice in your mind was screaming at you to run, but the promise of riches was too powerful to ignore now.
"Enter, wanderer," the voice finally said, as if sensing your growing apprehension. "We shall discuss the matter within our protected walls."
You smiled happily at the darkness, relieved that you hadn't yet been roasted by a fireball. You took one last look at the sunlight before you entered the Enchanted Tower.
