Years ago it all began. Dr. Moriarty was known as Phillip J. French and he wasn't a doctor or even a professor back then. He was a tinkerer and had discovered a machine device which would form the basis as his empire. Back then the device was much simpler than that it would become at the beginning of this story. At first the device was more of a mind manipulator than anything else. It couldn't transfer traits back then or do any physical manipulation, but it could put thoughts and ideas into the heads of its victims.
The first experiments using this device was on Phillip himself. He was working alone so he tried to do something simple. He set up the device and then strapped himself in. On his first experiment all he did was change his preference of ice cream from vanilla to chocolate. It was clean and simple. The problem was that once he had changed his preference he thought he had liked chocolate ice cream all along. He didn't know if the device worked because after using it he didn't even remember liking vanilla better. He still liked both only now chocolate over vanilla.
The next experiment he decided to write down in his own hand what he was trying to change. He wanted something unusual but not bizarre. This time he decided to change his name to James Moriarty. The 'real' James Moriarty was a neighbor of his. James had a doctorate and was a professor at the local community college. Phillip set up his equipment and started the process. When he was done he thought his name was James Moriarty. He was actually certain of it. But all indications from his home and life said that he was in fact Phillip French. This was proof that the machine did really work. But the problem is that the machine worked so well that he couldn't be objective. He knew his name was James Moriarty he couldn't really believe that his name was anything else.
The next thing he tried was to do something more esoteric. He wanted to see if he could make himself more intelligent. In theory it was possible but he wasn't 100% sure. This experiment would take almost a week to set up. When it was done he didn't feel any smarter. He felt like he had been this smart all along. This was the original problem when he experimented on himself the device worked so well that he had thought nothing had happened. It was now clearly evident that he needed to do his experiments on a test subject so he could see the results of his tests objectively. Also raising one's intelligence was a massive operation and there were factors that Phillip didn't consider so during the process Phillip became twisted. Among other changes in his personality which he didn't recognize his moral compass had been seriously reset southward.
