“That isn’t your only idea,” says Joe diplomatically. You close your eyes momentarily and offer a silent thank you. A flat no would only have angered Chelsea. Though you could always order the golem to accept your decision, you suppose. Or would that change her personality too much?
“I’ve got lots of ideas,” beams Chelsea, pulling your attention back to her. “Don’t you want to run the AP set?”
“We just want to make a good decision,” answers Joe for you again. “Who else is there?”
Chelsea makes her thinking face again – you’re increasingly sure that she’s putting it on – and then answers Joe’s question with a grin. “The wannabes.”
“The who?” You have to ask.
“The wannabes,” states Chelsea again. “You know the people that aren’t as popular as me.” No flicker appears on her face. No little wry smile or tell to indicate that she is being anything other than one hundred percent sincere. “But aren’t as unpopular as all the losers. Uh… no offence meant.”
“None taken,” you say weakly.
“I mean, I didn’t mean to say you’re a loser or anything,” continues Chelsea, now with just the hint of malice in her eyes. “I mean you are, but that’s what we’re changing isn’t it? You’ll be popular when we’ve decided who you can be, even if it's only someone from the second table.”
“Who is that though,” asks Joe on your behalf.
“Oh, the football team I guess,” says Chelsea with a dismissive wave of her hand. “If you don’t mind losing every game from now till graduation. Molly Shaw and her groupies. I’d like to know some of the things they get up,” she adds darkly. “Joe Ysleta and Victoria Rodriguez, or Cameron Huber and Anne Starkey. If you don’t mind being a cheap knockoff of me and Gordon.”
“You don’t make it sound that good,” frowns Joe.
“Oh it’s not like that,” pouts Chelsea, crossing her arms. “It’s just… they aren’t as popular. We could change all that though. Once you’re in place,” she finishes, unfolding her arms and placing her index finger lightly on your chest.”
“And what do you get,” you stutter.
“Influence,” admits Chelsea. “I don’t move much in the circles these guys do. And I don’t trust Kendra to be honest about what she hears from some of them.”
