Mermaids are common throughout the world's water sources, from the great oceans all the way down to small ponds and marshlands. Often connected by river systems both above and below ground. They tend to be rather nomadic and live in small groups to avoid attention, joining with others they meet for safety. Leaving and joining groups as often as the days pass for many mermaids. They typically are about the size of Faeries, and tend to be carefree and playful. Mermen are not uncommon, though they typically tend to be solitary.
They have many enemies, as they are low on the food chain and many of the more voracious sentient races are always eager to snack on them. In the region we're focused on, their biggest enemies would likely be the Grekka of the marshes. Unlike say the Faeries or the Sprites, they have neither their male counterparts to protect them or their own strength and will to do so. They rely entirely on staying hidden and being evasive. Neither of which they are particularly great at. Luckily they do have numbers, allowing their kind to survive and even remain strongly represented throughout the world's water sources.
In nature Mermaids are rather capricious beings, who change companions and locations often. This nature comes out in their reaction to the loss of a friend or companion to predation. They aren't the type to mourn usually, though this isn't all encompassing. Usually a kind of indifference as their outlook on said companion changes from friend to simply food. And a relief that it wasn't them who was eaten. Despite their prospects, Mermaids are typically rather carefree.
Playful and curious, they're very attracted to new objects in their environment, especially shiny ones. This makes them susceptible to being tricked by some of the more clever and ravenous races. As well as some predators especially adapted to hunt their kind.
Mermen are uncommon and tend to travel alone, occasionally tagging along with groups just long enough to enjoy the company of each of the mermaids before once again splitting off. Their young are left to fend for themselves, being born from eggs, with an instinctual need to seek out groups for protection.
Mermaids tend to be the most curvaceous of the three races. Making them an especially filling meal for their predators.
