The Path To Haven

"Truly Selina, I don't be want to be mean," Arva said fearfully, trying her best not to offend the younger mermaid, "But would you please be quiet for a moment?" The girl had only recently joined her and Reka and she was already starting to get on Arva's nerves. She seemed incapable of keeping quiet, not once taking into account what would happen if she brought the attention of a predator to them. A worry that hounded Arva's every second. Unlike many mermaids, Arva realized just how fleeting their lives could be. Obsessed over it really. She didn't want to end up like so many of the others she had seen eaten.

"S-sorry," Selina whispered, truly chagrined. She wasn't a bad companion, she just lost track of her surroundings too easily. A curse of youth and inexperience rather than being dimwitted. She had come upon them a few days past as they left the spring river below and entered this lake for the first time. Her last companion had been caught and quickly devoured by a vole, and she'd been traveling alone for nearly a week. So Arva didn't hold her eagerness against her. But between her never shutting up and the fact that she'd missed two fish and an eel already whilst they swam, well, she was a liability more likely to draw unwanted attention. Arva hated liabilities.

Gods knew Reka must be thinking about it, she'd be the first among them to go with those massive breasts of hers. Arva's own were a close second, though in her mind they were perkier and better shaped. Still, she thanked the gods yet again for blessing her with the company of her sunshine blond companion. It wasn't always best to be first, especially when the prize meant you were also picked first for being eaten. Still, despite her prospects, Reka was as carefree and cheery as ever. A sparkle in her aquamarine eyes as she teased the younger mermaid.

"Yes, you're quite loud my sweet, what you need is something to focus your attention on," She told her, gently running her fingers down the petite mermaids silky back and to the gentle swell of her rear. Her laughter like music as the girl blushed prettily, a playful wink to Arva letting her know it was all in fun. But that was Reka for you. If there was one thing always on her mind, it was fun.

Reka had been trying to convince Arva into letting the younger mermaid in on their fun since the first day she'd joined them. An idea she'd thoroughly shut down. It wasn't that Arva didn't find Selina attractive, the petite younger mermaid was certainly that, even if her small breasts left her wanting. But introducing another into their play meant Reka's attention would be divided. That, Arva disliked very much. So for the moment Reka would have to be content with limiting her fun with Selina to teasing and flirting.

Arva paused suddenly, leaving Selina backpedaling so as not to crash into her. Reka had no such reservations of course, pressing tight against Selina's back and letting her hands wander in a poor mimicry of steadying herself. They had finally reached the drop off, where the lake bed fell drastically and the so did the safety of the shallows. Arva couldn't help but shudder at the sight.

The long thick grass coating the lake bed gave way here, along with the safety it provided. The deeper waters ahead held a whole other kind of underwater forest, one thick with lily stocks. That forest, dim and murky as it was, was stalked by dangerous predators. The few beautiful dappled rays of sunlight that broke through the dense canopy above caught the occasional glint of scales. There were fish, turtles, crabs and more lurking out there. All eager for a chance to make a meal of them.

Nonetheless, they would have to cross the grove to reach the beach, the shallows on either side were bare of foliage. With other avenues providing no cover from hungry eyes, it was better to risk the Lily Groves. Though, Arva supposed, not by much.

"Careful is key here Selina," Arva told her nervously, "Stay quiet, stay close, and most important stay alert!"

Selina seemed to finally understand, her kelp green eyes fearfully wide as she scanned the water past Arva. Deep brown locks bouncing gently in the light current about her sweet face. Her full lips turned downward in a worried frown.

"We're going out there??" She whispered harshly, "But it's dangerous in the Lily Grove!" Her pink lips quivered a little at naming it. It was well known after all. This lake was a hub of sorts for many of the regions waterways, and the one they needed lay smack dab on the opposite side.

"Yes," Reka chimed in pleasantly, "But the river we need to follow is across it, so that's why we'll just be very, very careful." Selina seemed to calm a little at Reka's reassuring smile. Though Arva couldn't help but answer with a scowl. She had been glad their new companion was taking things seriously for once, someone else needed to.

The Lily Grove wasn't to be taken lightly. Quite honestly, there was a strong chance they wouldn't all make it across. Arva just prayed that she and Reka did, and if not Reka, well, at least her.

She couldn't still her own trembling at the thought of the crossing. But she'd heard tell of a small pond thick with their kind, empty of most predators and perfect for a few weeks safety. It was so very tiring to be afraid all the time.

Arva had heard it from the most beautiful mermaid she ha ever seen. Maybe a year her senior, with the most beautiful flame red hair, hooded green eyes, full red lips and delicate chin. Her tail a warm a yellow, unlike Arva's own light purple. They'd met for only a moment, in passing as Arva fled the small pond she'd called home for so long, into the tunnel of one of many underground rivers that connected the land's waters. Melina, as she had been called, had been on her way in.

She could still practically see her full, pert breasts bobbing gently in the current. Smiling wide and dreamily as she excitedly told Arva of the Haven pond. Melina had heard it herself from an older merman, who had given her directions in return for a little company. She hadn't asked anything of Arva though, instead eagerly sharing everything she knew.

Melina had been on her way there herself, deciding to stop off in Arva's pond for a rest. In her excitement Arva had completely forgotten to warn Melina of the massive snapping turtle she had left frustrated and hungry by the river entrance. So when she heard Melina's frightened squeal followed by a loud snap and a crunch, well, she knew what happened before she reached the entrance.

Melina's pretty yellow tail had been twitching madly as it slid gulp by snapping gulp out of sight and into the now very satisfied snapping turtle's jaws. Each hard bite followed by a very noticeable lump traveling down it's wrinkled throat to be deposited in it's empty belly. Arva didn't dwell on her mistake. In the end it just meant more room for her when she reached the safety of the Haven pond.

She had met Reka soon after, and the two had it hit if off quickly. Traveling together for the next few weeks as they slowly made their way to the Haven pond.

"Alright," Arva said steeling herself, "Are we ready?" Giving her companions a worried glance, her fear growing as they nodded their approval. But she forced herself out of the grass and into the open, the dappled sunlight shining down on her snowy skin.Catching the deep purple highlights in her long blue hair as it fanned out about her.

Selina and Reka joined her moments later, each watching her to follow her lead. There was no turning back now.
