This choice: Mom thinks she's you!  •  Go Back...
Chapter #5

Mom thinks she's you!

    by: Wassel Author IconMail Icon
Looking over at your mom to make sure she was alright (and perhaps find out where exactly the two of you had gone wrong), you got one hell of a surprise as she suddenly shrieked in excitement, "Oh wow...IT WORKED!"

This naturally left you somewhat confused - seeing how it quite obviously hadn't worked - and watching as she then proceeded to gawp at herself, pulling and prodding at her long red hair (as if it was the first time she'd ever touched it), you could only surmise that she was just messing around. "This...this is so weird!" she continued, eventually looking back at you, her face now wearing an expression of wide eyed enthusiasm you never before seen her wear, "I'm a girl! I'm...I'm you!"

"Very funny, mom," you told her, shaking your head, having had quite enough of her performance.

She wasn't quite ready to give up the act just yet however, shooting you a look of confusion at this. "Wuh...wait, what? But..but you're mom!"

"Yeah, yeah. I get it. Your making fun of me cause I believed it would actually swap our bodies. But you thought it would work too remember?"

"What are you talking about? It did work! It swapped our bodies! I'm you now and you're me....It's freaking incredible!"

Though you'd never seen her act quite like this before and she was admittedly doing quite a good job of pretending to be you, you weren't really in the mood for this right now, telling her, "Okay. Whatever..." before grabbing the instruction manual and heading over to the control panel of the machine to try and figure out where you'd gone wrong.

Your mother however wasn't ready to stop just yet, still giving it all she had with this rather pointless performance. "'Whatever'? Are you serious? We just swapped bodies and you're like 'whatever'?! This is way better than 'whatever'! This is the greatest discovery in the history of the world! I mean I'm...I'm a chick!...Holy crap, I'm actually a chick...." It was at this point that her voice sort of wavered, and looking back up from the booklet you saw her attention once again focused on her own body - her eyes lingering on her large chest for a lot longer than you would have deemed appropriate.

Okay, as funny as this wasn't to begin with, it definitely wasn't funny now. Your mom was acting way too creepy for your liking and making you feel more than a little uncomfortable. As far as you were aware she'd never been that great of an actress, but here she was giving an almost Oscar worthy performance as fourteen year old boy in an adult woman's body - moving and talking in a manner that was far more familiar as...well, as you!

"Okay, seriously, mom, just quit it will you! You're freaking me out."

"Mom? Why do...why do you keep calling me mom?" she replied, sounding rather disturbed. "...What the hell is going on?"

"That's what I wanna know!" you shot back, feeling your own growing sense of unease quickly building (your gut telling you that something was seriously wrong indeed).

"We...we switched bodies...Didn't we?"

"No, we didn't! We're still in our own bodies! I'm Daryl and you're my mom, so will you please stop pretending like you're me!"

"Buh...but...No. No way! You have to be mom," she said, her voice trembling now with desperation. "I'm Daryl! I'm your son and you're my mom!"

It was at this point that the realization of what had happened suddenly hit, seeing the fear and sincerity in your mother's face, and standing there staring at one another for almost a full thirty seconds while this information sunk in, you both then simultaneously squeaked (as if indeed you were the same person) "...oh shit!" The body swapping machine might not have worked as intended, but it had definitely done something...something which was just too freaky for words!

"Oh my God. I think that somehow the machine has switched mom's mind with mine," you said, attempting to understand it as you did (your 'mom' clearly doing the same as well), "So that you think you're me!"

"No way!" she responded, shaking her head defensively, "I'm me. It must have switched your mind!"

"That doesn't make any sense, how can it switch my mind? ...I'm already me!"

"Are you thought? How do I know?"

"Because I am!" you yelped, finding it utterly bizarre that you were having to actually prove your own identity, before of course realizing that your 'mom' was obviously feeling exactly the same way.

"Okay, then prove it! When was the fist time I got into a fight?"

"In the 4th grade, after Billy Mackenzie tripped me up in gym class," you told her, shooting a question back of your own. "Where was my super secret hideout in our old house, the one I used to keep Tara from stealing my toys?"

"Duh...in the attic, behind all those old lawn chairs," she replied with a shrug, as if finding the question way too easy.

Deciding on a much harder question to ask then, you found yourselves once again (rather eerily so) hurriedly blurting out the exact same thing, asking "Where did me and Mary have our first kiss?", and answering almost immediately with "Out in the woods by that gnarly old oak tree!" - proving without a shadow of a doubt that it most definitely was your mind inhabiting your mother's body.

"Oh crap," she gulped (or should you say he?), dragging her eyes back to her now middle aged hands, no longer looking quite so amazed.

"Yep. We're the same person," you said, still trying to wrap your head around it - it appearing for all intensive purposes that it was your mother standing right there in front of you. "Or at least you think you are."

What followed was one of the more bizarrer conversation you'd ever had in your life (as if it wasn't bizarre enough already), as the two of you tried to figure out what the hell had gone wrong and how the machine had managed to screw up so badly, as well as trying to come to terms with the reality of your situation. Your mom, or the 'other you' was clearly having difficulty getting to grips with the fact that he wasn't who he thought he was, and you similarly were more than a little freaked out at having to deal with 'yourself' in the guise of your own mom. It was all just completely surreal.

Unfortunately, after a rather exhaustive search of the manual and after somewhat unsuccessfully trying to retrace what your mom had done to the controls, the two of you ended up drawing a complete blank - having no idea what had gone wrong, nor how to fix it.

"I don't understand how this happened. It says nothing anywhere about copying brains or rewriting minds or whatever the hell this is," you sighed, chucking the manual to the floor and looking up at the 'other you' in frustration. "How are we supposed to fix it?"

"Beats me," he shrugged, giving up his own overly thorough examination of the various dials and switches. "If only we knew what mom did when she turned it on."

"You can't like...you know access her memories or anything like that then?"

"Uhm, no," came his reply, laughing at the thought.

"Crap! That would have been really useful too."

With very little options remaining now - the only sensible, adult brain in the room having been replaced by your dorky one - you figured that there was nothing for it, you had to tell your Dad, hoping that he would somehow be able to reverse this and actually bring your mother back...

You have the following choices:

*Pen*
1. He agrees and you go fetch your father

2. He disagrees, wanting to stay your mother a while

*Pen* indicates the next chapter needs to be written.
