Putting this idea to him then, you saw a sudden look of realization appear on your mother's face as the 'other you', nervously yelped, "No, wait! We can't! What if he fixes it?"
"What do you mean?" you asked, pretty sure that's what you'd been trying to do for the last fifteen minutes or so. "That's what we want him to do. Dad's good with mechanical stuff. If anyone can bring mom back he can!"
"I know, but...but what happens to me? If mom gets her own mind back, do I just like disappear or die or what?"
This wasn't something you'd actually given any thought to, but in a way you supposed that was what in essence would essentially happen. "Uhm, I...I guess so," you replied, getting the impression by his panicked look that that definitely wasn't what he wanted to hear.
Sure enough, the next words out of his mouth where, "Then maybe this isn't such a good idea. I'm not sure I want to die. Not yet anyway."
Faced with a similar prospect, you weren't entirely sure you'd want to either, but still 'he' wasn't really anyone, he was just your mom who thought she was you, and you really did need to get your mom back. Treading as tactfully as you could then, you tried to assuage some of these worries by explaining, "But you won't really. You'll just be who you're supposed to be - which is mom." pointing then to your own forehead as you added, "You'll still be in here."
"You'll still be in there," he said, mimicking your action by pointing at his own head, "But the you that's in here...that is mom, he'll be gone forever!"
Clearly there was no sneaking anything past yourself and you unfortunately couldn't really argue. "Well technically, yes. But what are we supposed to do? You're mom, not me! You're not supposed to be in there. You can't just stay inside her body and pretend like everything's normal. It wouldn't be right!"
Slumping against one of the pods, being of course aware of this himself (it was 'his' mom too his mind had overwritten after all), he replied sadly, "Yeah, I know. It's just...I've, well, I know I'm not really you, but it totally feels like I am. And here I am inside someone else's body...experiencing something that nobody has ever done, and you're wanting to change me back already!" You could see where this was going, but you let him continue on, really feeling for his predicament. "Couldn't I just stay a little while? Not forever, but just long enough to truly experience what it's like, and maybe have some fun with it. Don't tell me it wouldn't be totally awesome to have yourself as your 'mom'? We could totally play video games all day, and I could let you off with all kinds of shit, and we could do whatever the hell we want because I'm an adult now!"
Admittedly that was kind of a fun thought - being your own parent (though a slightly surreal one at the same time) - and you didn't doubt having yourself for company wouldn't be a blast. Heck, who'd be more fun to be around than someone who likes and hates all the same stuff as you do, knows everything you know, and who you wouldn't have to worry about upsetting or annoying, cause he's exactly the same as you?
"Please," he begged, snapping you from your thoughts, your mother's pleading face being a sight you don't ever think you'd seen before. "Come on, dude, you know it'll be awesome."
While probably not the wisest decision you'd ever made, your curiosity did eventually win out, figuring that there'd be no real harm in letting him stay for a little while. And so you told him, "Okay. I guess." watching as his face instantly lit up. "But on one condition..."
"Sure, anything! Name it!"
"If we're not going to tell dad, then we've got to figure out how to fix this thing ourselves. Agreed?"
"You got it!" he beamed, looking like he would have agreed to just about anything as he enthusiastically jumped up off the pod and began doing a stupid little dance. A stupid little dance that you often did when things went your way, and which seeing now, performed by your mother's body, looked absolutely ridiculous.
Once he'd gotten this out of his system and you made a mental note to stop dancing like that in the future, you asked yourself, "So...what now?" having no real idea what to do now, this whole thing being a very unreal and confusing situation. Not that you couldn't see the funny side though, adding jokingly as an afterthought "...mom."
