L'aura del campo

'é a lua, é a lua, na quintana dos mortos'
♣ Federico García Lorca ♣

Higgins Street Bridge, April 25th 2009, Missoula, Montana

L'aura del campo. A breeze in the meadow. So it began the last day of Spring, 2005; on the 16th day of the month of Light of the year 162. This is a supplement to my daily journal written to a friend, my muse; notes I do not share. Here I will share what the breeze has whispered to me.

Sky clock

Someone once lived here seeking water
where there was only dust,
and fed themselves by the sweat of their labor
and the crap shoot of luck.

Then rains stopped or the children grew up
and gold returned to rust;
but, the windmill kept recording the seasons
of what is and was once.

Delta

         to participate

We were mere droplets
brought together in clouds
that shrouded mountains.
We fell from grace,
gaining speed in rivulets
that joined to cascade
in waterfalls and rapids.
We became complacent
as land flattened out
and we meandered
as if there were no tomorrow.
Now we have entered the delta
spread apart by time and distance
searching for each other.
Soon our journey will be over
united again by the seashore
perhaps to rejoin the clouds.

Ulpiana beckons

I'm as conflicted as Kosovo,
constricted by history and heritage
to consume myself, leaving nothing
but crumbs among ruins.

Under Serbian cornfields
shards of Rome rest to be uncovered
as if peace could be discovered
between the bombs and besa of Albanians.

I feel passion tearing me to pieces.
I have always been content with crumbs. (I've always survived/lived off of crumbs)

I have a flag of Kosovo on my kitchen counter. I look at it and wish I were there. There are many places, so many places to visit that I'll never visit; yet, I have been blessed.

April in Costa Rica

Summer's dust is washed away. 7
Big bugs come out to play. 6
Birds now sit upon their nests. 7
We thank the rains; we're blest. 6

Roads to somewhere go nowhere, 7
the bridge no longer there. 6
Holy Week is over now. 7
No need to go to town. 6

Miss planting, you'll go hungry. 7
No time to be angry. 6
Not idyllic as it seems. 7
It's time to plant the beans 6

Tucked away

         inspired by "1000 Stars"

The east wind blew me away.
When will the west wind blow me back?
I ran to where the east wind never stops.
A thousand miles isn't far enough.

I left everything behind
except what I tucked away.
There you'll rest forever close to my heart.
A thousand years isn't time enough.

The stars above connect us
with their eternal promises.
The Moon shines kindly down on us. She knows
a thousand miles is never enough.

The ground waits to receive my bones.
The empty sky awaits my soul.
Unitl I depart let the east wind blow.
Ten thousand years won't be enough.

Doubts

You cannot count us;
we dance before your eyes
as motes or midges,
enter you heart as pain
or longing,
myriad mounds of regret
unmelting,
closer than your life-vein.

Rubaiyat for May

When winter melts to spring
and robins start to sing
amidst pink apple boughs
beware the bumble's sting.

Bound to your solemn vows,
protect and never drowse
nor ever fall asleep
awake in the here-and-now

listening to soft cheeps
of chicks that search to eat
fat ticks and bugs that hide
among young blades of wheat

and let them be your guide
for letting go your pride;
when robins start to sing
for what Mother Earth provides

listen to what flowers say,
"Accept what comes each May,
for June may change its tune.
Be grateful for this day."

Under a pink umbrella

         in Gdansk

Under a pink umbrella
she waits for her eager lovers
as evening lamps begin to glow
and raindrops make the walkways sparkle,
waiting for the clouds to part,
and the gentle breeze to waft
over the amber light's reflection
of the city slumbering in summer.

Response to a prayer

May we find peace
by coming together
and bless raindrops and sunshine
regardless of weather
and know we are valued
as we come from the One
who gives us love's tools
to recognize we're all one.

And may we be glad
to be alive at this hour
to live in a country
which labors with power
as we overcome differences
deserving of praise
and receive the Lord's Mercy
from our birth to our grave.

Notes: ‘Abdu’l-Bahá came to America in 1912. He visited Chicago for the dedication of the cornerstone of the Bahá’í Temple, May 1st, 1912.

Prayer for America

O Thou kind Lord! This gathering is turning to Thee. These hearts are radiant with Thy love. These minds and spirits are exhilarated by the message of Thy glad-tidings. O God! Let this American democracy become glorious in spiritual degrees even as it has aspired to material degrees, and render this just government victorious. Confirm this revered nation to upraise the standard of the oneness of humanity, to promulgate the Most Great Peace, to become thereby most glorious and praiseworthy among all the nations of the world. O God! This American nation is worthy of Thy favors and is deserving of Thy mercy. Make it precious and near to Thee through Thy bounty and bestowal.

— ‘Abdu’l-Bahá

Also note: May is the end of Ridvan (May 1-2), the anniversary of the Declaration of the Bab (May 22-23), the commemoration of the Ascension of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá (May 28-29).

Between cardboard covers

It sits there staring,
beckoning me to open it,
get lost in ink and images
as if
as if I had spare time to dream.

Once I did,
before the storm,
before the lightning struck.

Would it help with searing pain?

It seeks
a sucking in,
a letting go

of someone else's loss,
their tears
their tears to cleanse my thoughts.

Someone else's plaintive pleas
now washed by rain,

their loss
their loss —

my gain.
