Brief insights into my writing world.
I started my blog in June 2016, intending to have a place to get my stories in the hands of readers. I started with one follower -- my wife. Seven years later, I am creeping toward 500 followers. I post a daily quote, as well as short stories, vignettes, and updates on our rebuilding project.

You can find my Tavern Tales at: https://jjshaun.com/

Enjoy!

In the morning, the group took advantage of their full coin purses. After looking at horses, and learning how much gold they’d need to take care of the beasts, they find a tavern for lunch. A young entertainer played a lute in one corner. Some time before their meal arrived, they overheard an argument between a city official and a merchant.

The caravan arrived in Cheerwater around mid-afternoon. Dariyus Lamanya collected his pay from the quartermaster and stood looking around the yard, wondering which direction to take. Would a rather large lavender dragonborn intimidate the locals? He hoped not. He hadn’t seen many of his kind outside his peoples’ lands. His scales flushed a darker shade of amethyst as he thought about the last rejection he had faced. Thankfully, his fellows stood up for him.

Zola knew her freedom from the arena was close. All she needed was that last bit of armor. Well, that and live through the melee. Now that she’d made a name among the gladiators, she faced tougher opponents. Sometimes more than one.

Qilynn Starpath watched the sailors throw heavy ropes over the rail to men waiting on the dock. They caught the arm-thick lines as they landed on the pier, wrapping them around sturdy wooden logs that disappeared into the harbor.

The small chamber they entered held a table with platters of foods they’d seen at the celebration. Two doors led from the room. One opened into a well-appointed hall, the other into a small water closet. The opposite wall of the closet outlined another opening, a faint light shining through the cracks.

After 1458 days, First Reader and I finally received our permanent Certificate of Occupancy from the county. This was a few days shy of the four-year anniversary of losing the house to the Cameron Peak Fire. We still have work to do, but the building department now considers the house complete. Any new construction we want will require another building permit.

Lyryk woke to Biscuit’s cold, wet nose sniffling in her ear.

Must you? She thought to the dog, grumpy at the rude awakening.

Is time, came the reply.

After the intermission, Lyryk returned to the stage. Eliam joined her a few moments later. His face was pale, as if he were ill. He picked up his harp and plucked a mournful tune. She tapped the rhythm on her drum, letting him set the tempo.

Spymaster Tordak Hammersong had secured a commission for Lyryk Starsong to play on the fortieth birthing day of one Lady Pamila Redthorne. Rumors swirled around the Redthorne family, and nearby residents found them strange birds, indeed. Lord and Lady Redthorne invited the elite of Morganskeep to attend various celebrations throughout the year. And, every season, the gossip brought more rumors of the family’s odd behavior and unusual taste in music and art.

You board the trade and passenger vessel Sea Drake in Thayur, the major trade hub along the eastern seaboard. Your plan: to sail from Thayur to the northern desert port city of Abad-Noir, then maybe along to Brookhaven, Port Ramall, and eventually Noxport. These cities are all major ports along the main trade roads that connect the continent’s interior.
