End of Empire

Barbarians at the gate,
late for the party,
demanding entrance
without invitation
and looking rather ugly.
Nervous usher asks,
“Whom shall I say is calling?”
“Tell ‘em the Huns,” says Attila.

Upping the Ante

“Have a guess,”
said Einstein.
“Oh I couldn’t,”
I replied
and he responded,
“What’s the worst
that could happen?”
I shrugged. “You’re the scientist.”

Symmetry

The arch, up and over,
the stream tamed to a reflective calm
below, water held in a geometric clasp
and the humped bridge
in the air and under water,
a perfect mirrored O,
all in the soft, pastel colours of autumn,
nature and artifice in harmony.

Perspective

The urchin in a Rio slum,
the pampered son in mansion,
barge boy in his floating home,
daughter of the tribal chief
in grassy house upon the veld,
or Papuan child of jungle,
all regard their upbringing
as dull and unremarkable.

A Middling Song

The fact is I was born in the middle
Of England and maybe this is why
I’m on the fence and in the middle
Of the roads I take, low or high.
Of all Ages I prefer the Middle,
But the one in the middle
Sings. “Hey diddle diddle,”
‘Cos he’s just a pretty face.*

Our latest design
in the Aladdin line,
the Golden Glow,
pride of our portfolio.
But heed this warning
every morning -
when cleaning the lamp,
don’t rub too hard or our genie guarantee will be voided.

Bubble Trouble

Bubble gum and
bubble boy,
double trouble and
Russian rouble,
humble bumble
might stumble and crumble
rumble, tumble, mumble, grumble
fumble, jumble, my brain’s gone numble.

Plant 2

Oh, deep in thy vegetable heart of matter,
what humous thoughts grow thou?
Tomorrow you feed on their rotting flesh,
though they may pluck thee now.

Under a spreading chestnut tree,
this wordsmith found his treasure;
beneath the aged, tangled roots,
lies wisdom beyond measure.

For Express It In Verse, January 04 2021
Prompt: Beneath.
Notes: The first verse is over 50 years old, having been written in my youth as a complete departure from my usual style. It was reminded to me by the word “beneath” which made me think of roots and things underground. The second verse was added to justify including the first and as an echo of Longfellow’s poem, The Village Blacksmith.

Cabbages

Newly arrived from the warmth of Africa,
we went for a walk in the crisp, cold winter
of Kent, breath steaming in the sharp air.
Crossing a ploughed field with only the stumps
of cabbages showing above ground,
the crunch of our footsteps on the frozen soil
awoke us to a new continent, a homeland
as old as the hills and as fresh as now.

Mulberry

Like blackberries but sweeter,
dark fruits hang in profusion
midst the leaves of the mulberry tree,
tempting and staining the tongues
of its adventurous climbers,
rising through its branches.
The silkworm, too,
numbered among its gifts.
