Starlings In autumn the starlings gather, massed in flocks of thousands, dark, amorphous shadows expanding and contracting in the grey and overcast sky, a single mind controlling the nature of the dance. Their wings beat like rain on our ears, their voices the bubbling streams of earth. Line Count: 8 Free Verse For Express It In Eight, October 21 2020 Prompt: The first of the video links. |
Marylebone Thoughts “Jolie” being French for pretty, one wonders how it came to be “merry” in the rollicking tongue of the English that takes whatever it wants from languages encountered, and pronounces however it suits the words so recently borrowed. All in all, a jolly good show. Line Count: 8 Free Verse For Express It In Eight, October 20 2020 Prompt: Jolly. |
Making a Move More haste, less speed, yet he who hesitates is lost; look before you leap, but strike while the iron’s hot; hurry up and wait, and many a slip ‘tween cup and lip. it’s clear that indecision rules, I think… Line Count: 8 Free Verse For Express It In Eight, October 19 2020 Prompt: Haste. |
Precipitation As heaven pours out its blessing, be it the gentle drizzle of home or the jungle drinking its fill of the deluge released from above, the gale or tornado driven rain always sideways in the storm and gone in the drama of itself, all these and more to water the earth. Line Count: 8 Free Verse For Express It In Eight, October 17 2020 Prompt: Pour. |
Face in the Crowd Face in the crowd, buffeted, pushed, turned around, expression blank,, no apparent intent drifting with the flow, caught in an eddy of the rushing stream, like a leaf without direction, and eyes fixed on another heaven. Line Count: 8 Free Verse For Express It In Eight, October 16 2020 Prompt: Crowd. |
Luck ‘Tis not that the four-leaved clover’s lucky, it’s the finding one that matters, and the rabbit is the one that’s plucky, a foot lost means no pitter patters. A horse’s shoe might do the job, better than yours, at least, but it seems a stretch for us to rob something else, whether plant or beast. Line Count: 8 Rhyme scheme ababcdcd For Express It In Eight, October 14 2020 Prompt: Photo of hands holding a four-leaved clover. |
Preparation I find myself less able to crave these days. There was a time when a boon was craved, when craving was a more common thing, perhaps even an addiction demanding (‘tis a few years since smoking gave up on me). Yes, I do remember craving but maybe it’s true that the Lord is my shepherd and I shall not want, and right now I get better as I’m prepared. Line Count: 8 Free Verse For Express It In Eight, October 13 2020 Prompt: Crave |
Caryatids Like modern caryatids, we carry the mass of our worries, a solid, oppressing weight, high aloft on extended arms. The elegant Greek ladies of the Erechtheion, bearing the burden upon their heads, allowed their arms freedom, at least. Line Count: 8 Free Verse For Express It In Eight, October 12 2020 Prompt: Blackrock Dolmen by Rowan Gillespie Notes: The Erectheion is a beautiful building on the Athenian Acropolis whose roof is supported by sculpted female figures (called caryatids) instead of the more usual pillars. |
