Flying

The child’s aspiration soars,
high in the wind above,
riding the sharp and limpid light,
it bucks and rattles in the swirls
and eddies of the streaming air,
obedient to the guiding hand,
a single string, taut between
the kite and the soul below.

Heard on the Grapevine

Lifeblood of the conspiracy theory,
the connection between two events,
entirely unrelated but conjoined
through a convoluted stream of logic,
to link Elvis living on Venus
with JFK frolicking in Marilyn’s bed
while Hoffa wears a concrete suit.
Follow the money, connect the dots.

Folklore Abduction

The pied piper cast his spell,
enchanting the children of Hamelin
and leading them underground.
An overreaching revenge
for the rat catcher to wreak
for non-payment of wages,
even in those medieval times
when suing was unheard of.

Time 2

On my return to England,
I found myself duty bound
to care for my maternal Gran
in the last stages of her dementia,
a terrible thing that slips
through the gaps in life
to introduce eternity
long before its time.

Note: It’s called Time 2 because it’s not the first poem I’ve written with that title.

Towards a Solution

To solve this puzzle
first you must muzzle
an inclination to hustle.
A tendency to haste and bustle
will only make you bristle.
Much better still to whistle
on your way to ask dear Myrtle,
whose mind’s so very fertile.

A Directional Thought

Euclid said it’s geometric,
just calculate to make it tick.
Newton said things will go down,
it’s gravity will make you frown.
Einstein made it relative,
split the atom, get reactive,
but me, if I may interrupt,
I just want to cheer things up.

Hum

Summer and the house does hum,
the sound of air conditioned.
Winter furnace breathes its heat,
varies the domestic song.
Cosseted by constant comfort,
accustomed to its care,
we do not hear this service,
But notice when it stops.

Water Colours

Neon and silver brushstrokes
cavort and play in a water world,
construct of a smiling impressionist
who floods the sands with light,
meanders the wandering weeds
through the translucent scene.
Oh, calming canvas of clarity
painting of dreams, aquarium!

Fish

Supermarkets and shopping,
the dread round of boredom,
living only to slip away
to the seafood counter
and the wondrous display,
in glass cages and ice,
the silver armoured fish,
shellfish, creatures of the deep.

Silence

Silence is the friend that never chides,
the words that don’t need speaking,
the absence that still has presence,
no answer yet replete with meaning,
not rude nor pushy, ever civil,
temperate, uncritical and kind,
always unnoticed in the crowd,
with soothing gifts of peace of mind.
