Interface

Hole in my shoe,
like a window in the universe,
the world outside filtering in,
life fluttering past,,
leaves in the wind,
filling the room with images,
my soul as drenched
as my sodden sock.

Fear of Falling

High in the empty air,
he walks the narrow way,
eyes fixed on the goal,
all the universe reduced
to a single destination.
Concentration becomes all,
though he will say the wire
is a matter of balance alone.

The Virtues of Vocal Sandpaper

Gravel-voiced Lee Marvin,
trapped in the fluff of Paint Your Wagon,
was required to sing a song
maintaining that he was born
under a Wandering Star.
The result went to number one,
in the UK at least, in nineteen seventy,
making Marvin a one hit wonder.

Eight for Eight

An int’resting beast, the eight-line poem,
it teaches the art of brevity.
Get it done, get it said and take it home,
no pausing even for levity.

Or go on at length to your heart’s content,
then out with the knives and the cleaver,
and reduce the thing to say what you meant,
without all the waffling forever.

The Romance of Ruins

Near my home town stands Kenilworth Castle,
once the strongest fortress in England,
a ruin now but still impressive, especially
in its great, square block of a Norman keep,
that final redoubt within the encircling walls.

Below the keep stands a wall, eroded now
to a handy seat on which to rest and there,
on the stones, are the masons’ marks of long ago.

Apple

Years ago, when I was young,
I came upon the perfect apple,
shape so satisfying and true,
near symmetric but skewed
just enough to avoid cliché,
colour red and surface shining,
no viewing angle found it wanting.

It tasted good, too.

One of Those Days

Got all in a tangle today
My up’s gone all sideways
My down’s out on strike
The blues came out yellow
The salad’s overcooked
My budgie’s gone walkabout
My aunt’s come to stay
It’s all in a tangle today

Coventry’s River

My home town has a river, though you wouldn’t know it,
so shy and humble it is, rising as a crystal spring
in a field a short walk from my ancestral home,
carving itself a boundary ditch through parkland
to the city’s edge, then underground, unseen,
until it rises in a brief canal hidden in a back alley
and so, eventually, to the sewage works, to pay its dues
and be released and so become belovèd Sherbourne.

Note: The name Sherbourne is said to derive from Scir Burna, "clear stream" in Old English.

Thanks

My choice to write three prompts suggested,
my gratitude for inspiration
that somehow keeps me interested
and so ensures participation.
For Eight has been so solid a hit,
it joins my daily morning round,
the prompts so simple yet so fit.
For Solace let our cheers resound!

Listen

Listen, finger raised to still the air,
listen, ruler slammed upon the desk,
listen, earnest interjection quiet,
listen, don’t join the slogan-chanting,
listen, now the bedtime story starts,
listen, two ears but one mouth only,
listen, the request so rarely heard,
listen, and wait for wisdom’s whispers.
