Memories

“The birds, the birds!” they cry
and I hear the sound of jangling guitars,
angelic harmonies, eight miles high
and hey, Mr Tambourine or Spaceman
pounding in an open field and
Roger McGuinn the sole survivor.

Oops, my mistake,
I thought you said the Byrds.

Talking of Despair...

I peed blood this morning
and, for a moment, I despaired.
My doctor warned me of this,
clearly expecting the worst,
and I have been running scared,
dreading the fateful sign.
But hope remains resilient;
I’ve come back from other omens.

Prompt: Despair.
Note: This is not a plea for attention or sympathy. In fact, it’s the easy way out as regards writing to the prompt, since this is what’s occupying my mind. No need to say anything, therefore.

A Bonus Poem

The Cantaloupe
is a funny antelope;
it can canter
and lope if you wanter.
It has two extra letters,
the C makes it better
but the U does nothing at all,
just stops it from being small.

Swagger

Be yourself but cooler,
Indeed, I wouldn’t fool yer,
You’re doing well,
Only I can tell
I’m still your coolness ruler.

The reason why I beat yer
Is perhaps my strongest feature:
I was born the coolest creature.

Tutorial

Come with me, my child,
come to the edge of the forest
and look upon the habitation
of man and the birds in pens.
Here lies your future, the hunt,
for us to steal in the night,
feathered trophies in the mouth
and he, with dogs, in the morning.

Executive Order

Why doesn’t a candle
come with a handle?
Should only vandals
wear shoes called sandals?
Maybe we should promulgate
these things and legislate
so only Simple Simon
can do this silly rhymin’.

Muizenberg Beach

Ah, the sun-soaked days of my childhood,
so often under the open skies and sands
where the gentle sea lapped at the strand,
the waves hissing as they spent themselves
on the sloping beach, crumbling the castles
of dreams we built too close to the tide.

Yet I never learned to swim in those days,
waiting until the ocean lay a continent away.

Nevermore

She knitted the man some woollen pants.
He knew better than to refuse ‘em.
He earned the name, Ol’ Woollen Pants
(though, secretly, they don’t enthuse ‘im).

He wore the same to town one day.
The skies began to rain and pour.
Waterlogged his pants became
so heavy, they swiftly hit the floor.

Apology for Thoughts Unbound

Being a trifle contrary,
I wonder oft how lonely is a cloud,
so rarely seen as single
but commonly just one of many,
sometimes a host, at others,
combined as overhanging roof,
continuous in their multitude,
a shadow over us below.

Freedom

As the feather wafts,
unguided by desire,
adrift on the wind,
the aimless life floats
on the currents of fate,
spinning and turning,
a swirling chip of being,
ever awaiting landfall.
