Seasonal Advice

Autumn is in the air,
the herald of winter
proceeding from his lair,
frost about to splinter.

Now is the fabled time
to trumpet deeds to all,
to let our voices climb,
pride comes before the Fall.

Astronomy

Scale the wall of separation from infinity
to gaze into the eye of God;
you can look but never touch
those dancing spheres and fiery orbs,
their bright performance
in the eternal dark, the shadowed distance,
is for entertainment only,
a gift from His undying love.

Fortune Cookie

A fragile thing, the fortune cookie,
too brittle to be easily opened,
they’ll brook no premature lookie,
not even for reasons jocund.

The paper’s rolled and sealed inside,
its message unknown, unlooked,
but if you ask me to decide,
I’d say the books are cooked!

Challenge

On some high and distant hill
stands Johnny the commander,
so masterful of strength and will,
the terror of lowlanders.

He frowns down on his minions
and shouts out his dominion,
“I’m the king of the castle
and you’re the dirty rascal!”

Mandrake

Mandrake, male duck,
medieval panacea,
promises much,
never speaks of poison.

Mandrake, male root,
looks like us,
convinces us
resemblance conquers all.

Linguistics

Oh to be a polyglot,
so many ways to say
thank you and thanks a lot,
danke shoen and that’s okay,
merci beaucoup, grazie,
gracias and dankie
something else in Farsi;
I sound like a sneeze in hankie.

Never Exaggerate

A collection of miscellany
was owned by Mamselle Annie;
some dubious as felony
some sweet as frangipani

But everything did conjugate,
by likeness somehow aggregate,
the whole collection, at any rate,
together would amalgamate.

Prompts: Miscellany and Conjugate.
Note: Terribly sorry to the Americans but, for the purposes of this poem, I use the British pronunciation of the word “miscellany.” It rhymes with “felony.”

Life

Wrap me in swaddling clothes
or funeral pyre,
it’s only a matter of time
between the two.

We celebrate a birth
then burn a candle for the dead
and time ticks away
undaunted.

Dreamer

Butterfly mind,
not to be unkind,
yet you cannot settle ever,
since you slipped your wormlike tether,
random thoughts your mind is spilling,
with sweet reward your world is filling,
free to roam and flutter by,
since you are a butterfly.

The Crocodile’s Tear

Come my friend, be not alarmed
the day is young, the river charmed,
make time to swim and cool your fear
in water bright, my home is near.

The wonders of the stream I’ll show
as down into the deep we go,
so be assured, for you I’ll weep,
and guard you well while you’re asleep.
