Song of Seasons

Spring arrives, white-tipped and rattling
like swans preening in the reeds
while summer opens the vaulted sky
the grass flushed green and sighing
until autumn strews starlings like seed
and the winter wind will follow after
so the Earth turns in its wending path
harmonic revolutions of the seasons.

Gull standing on No Gulls sign.

Call of the Wild

Well, yes, of course I am a rebel
and my middle name is Jezebel,
a gull who understands its being
is to deceive and leave unseeing
the gullible and easily fooled;
to break the rules I have been schooled,
now my goal is to uproot this sign -
my bedroom wall demands it’s mine.

Heads and Tails

The truth is plain and unadorned,
there’s no need to embellish
what’s clear cannot be suborned,
to do so would be hellish

It’s lies that need prettifying
with twirls and swirls and tweaking,
and sleights unedifying,
so devious and sneaking.

Banana wood bowl

Bowl

brown bulging bellied
flecked with flickering filigree fires
fuelled and filled with fruit for feast nights
this the food for thought and glad the day’s celebration
also the artist’s aim at adipose illumination
satisfaction in the rounded shape
the upturned mouth agape
swell bellied

Mirrors

Between the mirrors lies the image
repeating fore and aft,
reflection receding stage by stage,
reiteration to infinity,
countless copies to distance swathed.
A moving finger replicates,
each shrinking, twitching digit bathed
in light from other worlds.

Father Time

Father Time,
dreaming in his subterranean cavern,*
stretches an arm
through the blanket earth,
up, up to the world above.
His fingers close on an aged tree,
plucks it like a grape.
He dreams of harvest.

* In one of the Narnian books, the adventurers pass through a cavern in which sleeps the giant Father Time until the end of the world.

September Morn

The nascent day comes later now
with a cool breeze at the morning window
the cat in her usual position, inhaling
the outside but in loaf pose, legs tucked
under for warmth, head nestled in shoulders
and the crows no longer extracting
her growls of frustration, she gazes.
It’s the twenty-second and autumn.

Maelstrom

The spiral galaxy turning in the void,
like the eye in the hurricane,
the tidal whirlpool in the strait,
water hastening towards the drain,
slowly at first, unconvinced
of direction, but gaining speed,
the centre’s proximity persuading
to join the rush to oblivion.

How Green Was My Country

England is the land of lawn,
social class revealed in grass,
how manicured the green carpet,
how lush the tiny blades.

Summer celebrated and
defined by hum of mowers,
tennis, croquet, bowls,
all struggles on the lawn.

Posers

Old Ma Enig and Miss Terry,
owners of Conan’s drum,
fond of riddles and mystery,
but sucked it from their thumbs.*

Oh, what a pair of ducks they be,
paradox and teaser,
but a quest on Darjeeling tea,
questions set to freeze yer.
