Entry for 2025-02-10 Prompt: "I never want to see you again." Word Count: 297 (294 Words & 3 Title) --- Start --- Echoes of Trust The rain drummed against the cobblestones of Munich's narrow alley, each drop echoing off the weathered walls. Franz Möller checked his brass pocket watch, its engraving catching what little light filtered through the storm clouds. The distant rumble of thunder masked the approaching sound of an engine until the Mercedes-Benz 170's headlights cut through the darkness, casting long shadows across the wet stones. Lukas Reinhardt emerged from the vehicle, his trench coat already darkening with rain. The brown envelope in his hand seemed to draw Franz's attention like a magnet, though he maintained his distance, years of military training evident in his rigid posture. "Franz," Lukas called out, his voice carrying over the steady drumming of rain. "It's been too long." Franz's fingers traced the familiar outline of his pocket watch. "Not long enough, Lukas." Lukas stepped forward, water streaming from the brim of his hat. "Your boy—he's finishing Gymnasium soon, isn't he?" The mention of his son made Franz's jaw tighten. "Leave him out of this." "I can't." Lukas extended the envelope. "His future depends on what's in here." "What game are you playing?" Franz's voice carried the edge of steel, his military bearing more pronounced. "No game." Lukas took another step closer. "Just insurance for your son's future." Thunder cracked overhead as Franz closed the distance between them, his eyes never leaving the envelope. "Why should I trust you?" "Because you know me, Franz. From before." Lukas's voice softened. "From the Reichswehr." Franz snatched the envelope, his fingers leaving damp impressions on the brown paper. "After this, I never want to see you again." Lukas nodded, water dripping from his hat. "Take care of your boy, Franz." He turned, his footsteps splashing through puddles as he returned to the Mercedes. --- End --- Contest:
