Penny deals with a forgetful husband. 300 words |
It's Gone, Or Is It? “Penny, have you seen my briefcase? I can’t find it anywhere.” “Check the hall table.” “Ah, you’re right, got it!” “Well, I’m off to work, “Oswald Corry said briskly as he was about to pass her to go out the door. “Aren’t you forgetting something?” Her husband patted his pockets, checked his wrist and the top of his head. Then he looked at her enquiringly. She puckered her lips until he sheepishly came back to plant a kiss on them. She stood and watched as Oswald hit the mailbox again backing out of the driveway. “He’ll wonder what happened to it,” she groused. Then she saw it. After all that to-do about his briefcase, there it sat on the table! Penny shook her head. Without hesitation, his wife grabbed the case and ran to her car. Pulling forward out of the drive, she turned toward Oswald’s office. In spite of driving carefully, Penny arrived before Oswald. She took the parking lot elevator up to his office. Seeing his office manager, she passed the case to her. She was just leaving, when a disheveled Oswald staggered in. “My Lord, what happened?” his wife exclaimed as she ran to his side. “I got mugged. They took my wallet, my watch, even my hat!” The receptionist called the police, while Penny soothed her beloved husband. “Don’t worry, dear! Those are all things that can be replaced. I’m so happy you’re not hurt!” Oswald stared at her, uncomprehending. “Get your hands off me! You’re not my wife,” he growled and pulled away from her. Bewildered, his wife of forty years, did as he asked. Paramedics arrived and checked him over. Finding a head wound they took him away. Penny followed anxiously behind. “What gonna happen now?” she asked herself. |
