Two guys chatting on a stone wall, and a gal walks by interrupting their conversation. |
“Good morning! She says.” “Good morning?” “Yeah, Good morning! Where does she think she is?” “This isn’t her bloody America!” “No, Shaun, it isn’t! So what is it you plan to do?” “Timothy Patrick O’Shea, if it's any of your concern, I plan to marry the girl.” “The heck you say!” “Yeah, it’s true, mate! I plan to marry her!” “She might have a say about that. She doesn’t even know you exist.” “Believe me, old friend, she will learn about Shaun O’Brien soon enough! Take my word on that.” “Look, Shaun, there she is!” “Where?” “Coming out of the postal. Now’s your chance. Introduce yourself!” “Don’t rush me, mate! I know how to do things here.” “Well? What are you waiting on? A personal invitation from her!” “Leave me alone, Timothy! Your wife needs you back at the house!” “Mind your manners. Leave my wife out of this conversation.” “You mind yours! Here comes the lass back this way now.” “Good morning, boys. Nice day, huh?” The bright red-headed girl smiled as she walked past Shaun and Timothy, and the boys sat on the stone wall, staring with open mouths. Suddenly, Timothy elbowed Shaun, causing him to fall from his perch. He landed on the cobblestone walk with a thud, causing the girl to stop and turn around. Shaun looked up at Timothy and, with an angry face, scolded. “Hey! What drove you to do such a thing? Are you daft or something?” He didn’t see the girl turn around as he finished his rant. But he became aware of her presence when she squatted down and touched his shoulder. “Are you alright? That’s a nasty fall you took from up there.” “Yeah, I’m an O’Brien! We are tough! Built tough from the crib, we are!” She laughed. “Well, Mister O’Brien, it’s nice you weren’t hurt. I guess I’ll be on my way then.” “Wait, lass! What’s your name?” “Nancy, Nancy Cramer. I’ve got to get home. Goodbye Mister O’Brien.” “Oh! You’re Old man Cramer’s niece then?” “Granddaughter! Bye now, I must go, Mister O’Brien.” Nancy turned and headed down the lane as Shaun balled his fist at Timothy. Timothy laughed, filling his eyes with tears. Immediately, Shaun scrambled over the wall’s loose stones, climbing upward toward his friend. “Just keep sitting there! I’m coming for you!” |
