Short story for a 300 word flash fiction contest
Where was he and how had he gotten here?

He had no memory except for the present moment.

There was momentary confusion.

It was beautiful really - a lush green forest that was alive beyond belief. Native wildflowers, vibrant with the most vivid colors, lined a babbling brook that flowed with crystal clear water. The sky above was a radiant blue and the sun was shining through a canopy of leaves, blowing slowly in the gentle breeze.

The sound came again. The far-off melody of a violin, soft and almost forlorn. Beckoning. Was there a greater meaning?

A memory formed in the deepest recesses of his mind. He’d been here before. There was no doubt.

He felt compelled to follow the haunting tune, and as he gazed ahead, a path formed out in front of him.

He began to walk towards the music, not really feeling his footsteps, but more so, gliding and floating along to a known but unclear destination. Time seemed to stand still. The soft songs of the birds and faint calls of the forest animals seemed to offer encouragement.

Through the eons of eternity or mere seconds (the reality unclear), he stood before an infinite wall with a majestic gate… animals meticulously carved into the wooden face that seemingly had been aged by the elements – lions, elephants, tigers, a monkey and doves in flight. It seemed symbolic, although the meaning was not immediately clear.

Although massive, the gate moved easily with even the lightest touch.

A single thought: " As we sow, so shall we reap" crossed his mind.

With clear intent, he moved through the gate, knowing he could not go back. He carried only his memories and love that he had saved.

I’m home - I have no regrets.
