Ellie's first hosting
Ellie shuffled the last plate of pumpkin pie onto the dining table, her cheeks flushed from the oven's heat and the excitement of hosting Thanksgiving for the first time. The aroma of roasted turkey, cinnamon, and sage filled the house, mingling with the laughter of her family gathered in the living room.

This year felt special. Ellie, now twenty-five and freshly moved into her first home, had taken on the challenge of hosting the holiday. The idea had seemed fun weeks ago, but as the day approached, she worried she wouldn’t match her grandmother's legacy of perfect Thanksgiving dinners.

As the clock struck noon, the doorbell chimed, and Ellie's grandmother, Nan, arrived. Dressed in her usual cozy cardigan and carrying her famous cranberry sauce, Nan surveyed the scene.

“Well,” Nan said with a wink, “this smells like you’ve been busy.”

Ellie blushed. “I just hope it tastes half as good as yours.”

Before dinner, Ellie suggested a new tradition: everyone would write one thing they were thankful for on a slip of paper. As the family sat down to eat, they dropped their notes into a bowl at the center of the table.

Halfway through the meal, Ellie's brother Tom reached for the bowl. “Let’s read these now!”

The room quieted as he read each note aloud. “I’m thankful for Mom’s hugs.” “I’m thankful for Dad’s bad jokes.” “I’m thankful for Ellie hosting us.”

Ellie blinked back tears. Then Nan’s note came: I’m thankful for the next generation keeping our traditions alive.

By the end of the night, Ellie realized it wasn’t about recreating perfection—it was about sharing love and gratitude. And in that, she’d succeeded.
