Young boy sees what thanksgiving is all about
Wrapping his 11-year-old mind around what Mom just said, he grinned.
After all, it wasn’t every day you got to have Thanksgiving with Mama and Pawpaw. I will be able to play out in the alley. I know it will be cold on Thanksgiving, so I don’t expect anyone else in the alley.
Once at Mama’s house, it seemed everyone was there, All my uncles and aunts. Being the only kid in the family makes me lucky. The house was warm and had that great home-cooking smell. Of course, everyone was in and out of the kitchen. And all seem to be arguing. So, I wandered into the living room where my uncles sat. They weren’t happy their favorite team was not on TV.
I went out to the alley away from the bickering for a while
Walking and throwing rocks as I went.
“OH!”
I moved toward a dumpster and hit it with a rock again.
“OH!” I heard a girl's voice.
Opening the side door of the dumpster and peering in I see a girl and a baby.
She looked like she had been in a fight.
“Go away!”, she said sobbing. “Leave us be! Please.”
Turning and seeing Mom I ran to her and explained what I saw in the dumpster.
I lead her down the alley to the dumpster, she opens the side door and gasps. She helped the young woman and baby out of the dumpster. The lady told mom, finding the partially empty dumpster was all she and the baby had for shelter that night,
We all hurried back to the house.
In the dining room, while eating she told her story of physical abuse. How she and the baby snuck out from her sleeping husband.
Not one person complained again that day.
