Melinda Sequoia

I know what is possible
when a woman reaches
right into the centuries

appeals to the earth
& the circlers of our moon

to help her grow the future
from a wee sequoia tree
(incongruously northeast)

I know what can happen
when a woman teaches
nourishes and nurtures

herself out of existence
in a dark that's got to give

I know what I can ascertain
when a woman beseeches
for better, for a piece of hope:

seeding with the wee sequoia
she will rise, evergreen & loved.
