Carla was capturing specimens for science study. 300 words
There Are Always Consquences

“What did you do that for?”

Carla, startled, dropped the net and cage she was trying to carry away.

She stared up at the ominous black shadow that seemed to be a woman.

“I need some for a science experiment.”

“I see, and why bats?”

“There are a lot of them, and they are easy to capture...”

“How would you like it if I did that to your pets?”

“Pets? These aren’t pets, they’re wild animals.”

“Our opinions differ on that point, I’m afraid.” She held out a shadowy hand and a bat landed on it.

Carla shivered but held tight to her equipment.

“Let me help you! Why don’t I carry all that heavy stuff for you,” the shady lady offered.

“Well, all right, just for a little way.”

She yawned mightily.

“Rest, my dear child. I’ll take care of all this.”

Sunrise hit Carla right in the eyes. She tried to jump up but found herself restrained by something. To her horror, it was the cage she had held the bats in.

“How are you enjoying captivity? A little confining perhaps?” said the voice she had come to know so well.

“Did you put me in here, you witch?” Carla snarled.

“Horrors, I’m no old hag. I am a vampiress. Those poor creatures you caged were like my children, but I restrained myself from doing what I might have done. Mostly so I wouldn’t have to put up with the likes of someone like you, for eternity.”

Carla had no words. The creature of the night laughed and instantly the cage shattered.

“Find another creature to study. Perhaps humans would be a better subject for your studies.”

Cramped and barely able to, the scientist hobbled away from the nightmare as fast as she could.
