A husband gets a terrifying call. Flash fiction using "paint", "clothes", "smile" |
Greg and Robin had been in love since they met at Jackson High School nine years ago. Even though they went to different colleges their commitment to each other never wavered. Their marriage after college came as no surprise to anyone and their life since had been picture-perfect... until today. Greg worked in sales at a local tech company while Robin was an electrical engineer who usually worked from home, though today was one of her days off. Her plan this morning was to paint the walls in the soon-to-arrive baby's room while she was still able to reach the walls without getting paint on her clothes. Greg was running a little late, so he quickly kissed Robin on his way through the kitchen but stopped and looked back. She flashed him that smile that always melted his heart. He grinned, waved, and ran out the door. At ten, Greg was in the sales manager's office getting some good news about a raise, when his phone rang. "This is Officer Franklin, sir. Do you know where your wife is?" "She's at home. Why?" "Well, sir, we got a call from your neighbor about a break-in at your address..." Greg hung up. He called Robin as he ran to the parking lot, trying several more times as he drove, each time increasing his panic. Arriving at his house, he found two police cars with lights flashing. The police stopped him before he could run in. He was about to scream at them when he saw Robin's car pull up. She got out saying, "What's happening? I just went out to the laundromat and..." "I tried to call." "Oh, I forgot my phone and..." She couldn't finish as Greg wrapped her in a hug and broke down in tears. |
