Short story for the Short Shots Contest. Picture of jars on a line and lights on bushes.
Emma Waldron decided to put some lights in her back yard and put out some some mason jars. She decided her yard needed some decorations. She put the lights on the bushes and hung the mason jars on a clothes line. She put little bells inside the jars. That night, she turned on the lights and she loved how lightning bugs flitted around the lights and mason jars. It was a beautiful sight.

Emma had been a widow for years and had no children. She just had two brown cats and they were her friends. She was in bed and she heard noises coming from her back yard. The bells inside the jars were ringing. Emma went outside and saw two black bears batting at the jars and the lights. Emma was brave and she took a broom outside and gently swatted the bears. One of the bears broke one of the jars and knocked the lights off the bushes. The other bear knocked Emma down and broke her other jars. The bears left and Emma was in tears. What gave those bears the right to do this?

The next morning, Emma got out more Mason jars and hung them on the clothes line and put the lights back on the bushes. She put the bells back in the jars. She hoped that the bears wouldn't return. That night, Emma sat outside and waited for the bears to come back. She fell asleep and she heard noises. The bears! Emma grabbed her broom but there were no bears. There were fairies flying around and they were putting items in her jars. A little blue fairy flew up to Emma and kissed her cheek.

"Do not be afraid, Dear Emma. We are your friends. We saw the lights and found your house. We wanted to leave you gifts. You have always been nice to everyone and now it is your turn to have something nice. These gifts are also from someone who loves you"

"Thank you." Emma watched the fairies and smiled. They were cute. She couldn't tell anyone. Who would believe her?

The next morning, Emma went outside and looked to se what the fairies had left her. There was money in one of the jars. She would never need this much money in her life. Another jar had a amethyst ring. It was such a beautiful purple ring. Her husband had promised her that he would buy her a ring like this someday. Was this gift from her departed husband Jed? Oh! How she missed him and loved him still. Another jar had assorted flower seeds. The last jar had jingle balls and stuffed mice for her cats. Emma looked by the bushes and saw a big brown Teddy Bear. So had her cats. Her cats, Bella and Alice were jumping on the Teddy Bear and smelling him. They liked him. Emma smiled.

Emma kept her jars out and the lights on the bushes but she only had visitors on Halloween and Christmas. A witch came on Halloween and left her candy and flower seeds in her jars and Santa left her cookies and ornaments in her jars. Emma thought maybe this was her departed husband's way of letting her know that he was still with her and thinking of her. She would tell Jed every day that she still loved him and missed him. She wore the beautiful amethyst ring every day She never forgot to turn the lights on at night. Her cats slept with the stuffed bear and friends and neighbors loved to come by to see Emma's beautiful lights. Emma seemed so happy. She was loved and was content.
