A few years back, when writing a book on the Vietnam War, I interviewed Vietnam veterans for on-the-ground information. I stopped the interviews when one of the vets committed suicide after divulging his participation in atrocities. The novel SCOOTER draws from these interviews and the hellish circumstances of the childhoods of some of these veterans. I have found the writing painful because of the ghastly things I uncovered. Yet, these veterans' lives and the guilt they carried deserve a telling.
