Girl with flaxen hair,
strong arms, strong features,
beauty and brawn!
Should I have told you how I felt,
entranced by your Kansas blue eyes,
your golden Kansas hair,
a reflection of wheat and sky,
with which you wove your wonder?
Where now the girl with flaxen hair?
Where now the woman you became?
Where the children, life’s legacy?
Had I spoken a word ...
would you have known life with me?
Where would I be?
... in Kansas, with Laura.
Kåre Enga
Note: This is based on a very beautiful summer in Sabetha, Kansas ... a long time ago. Laura was 17 and I was 23. We worked in the fields together cutting shattercane out of the milo (sorghum). (And no ... I never told her ...) An old poem from before 2000. My blog "L'aura del campo" is named with her in mind.
