Ice and snow, now comes the glooming fog,
Weather not fit for even a fur-coated dog,
The gasp of the freezing wind, biting cold,
To venture out you surely need to be bold.
Slipping and sliding wherever you walk,
Clouding the crystal-air whenever you talk.
Losing feeling in both fingers and toes,
And have glowing cheeks and a shiny nose.
But there is another side, wild and free,
Of winter; out in the country you can see,
An air of shrouded mystery can be found.
Existence continues with hardly a sound.
Animal tracks, ground covered in snow,
Proving life is there to find and know.
Trees standing naked, stark and gaunt
Your memory at times later to haunt.
Sinking knee deep in the drifting snow
As onwards you trudgingly try to go.
The exhilaration you achieve in the end
Is worth as much as making a new friend.
I like the winter it makes me realise,
There's more to life than cloudless skies.
At times it's a struggle to live each day.
Nature's beauty, iced, seen another way.
