An Exciting Day's Journey

I wake up today bright eyed; as excited as a child,
Who knows, exactly what this new day will bring?
Will I meet someone new, who is not yet profiled
in my memory, but by the evening makes my heart sing?
Will fresh experiences shape, reshape me, in a way
That will change me for ever and I’ll look back and say
That day was a new beginning, I didn’t know I’d find?
Such wonders are all around that could revolutionise my mind.

Will there be rainbows or dark thunderous clouds above?
Will I taste indifference, or compassion, or even love?
Will the sun shine and with its deceptive burning ray
Alter my skin, allowing a dreaded cancer to find its way
That will then change my future, may put limits on my time,
Put my body out of rhythm, take my innocence, a crime
In the making if I don’t heed the warnings, and take care,
Stop it now, before it can begin to leave its shadow there.

Will I find a thrilling adventure somewhere along the way
Of this new day that is dawning; sometime will I pay
For some careless action that I might carry out in haste?
Will I regret that substance, if I’m stupid enough to taste
What is banned, forbidden, by the legal system of this land,
Although some may not agree and others may not understand.
Could I be in more danger from unseen needles discarded there?
Become infected, then infect others, cause a lifetime of despair?

What pressures can, will greet me before the fall of night?
Will I witness an act of kindness, or see thugs that fight
Just for pleasure; if so, will I stand out from the crowd?
Be strong and stand up for what is right, speak out aloud
Ask to be counted, also be prepared to pay a fearful price?
Or will I sit, become invisible; run away like a scattering of mice?
I hope my day is boring rather than it turn out to be rough,
I want to enjoy soft and gentle, not be made to endure tough.

Whatever my day brings I hope that I make a new friend
That I add to my address book so in the future I can send
A card, a note, a letter, to show I care, to keep in touch,
Yes, I know this will be a good day that I'll enjoy very much.
I’ll remain excited, keep observing, eyes open wide with shine,
And whatever I experience, today's journey will be all mine,
To add to another book, a collection of memories this time,
A day where my heart sings and my thoughts are in rhyme.
