A LETTER WRITTEN TO A GRANDMOTHER FROM A CHILD WHO HAS DIED IN AN ACCIDENT
Dear Grandma,

I am sorry that I had to leave you so soon. I didn’t want to but this nice man came to get me and I couldn’t stay. I wanted to but he said I had to go with him. He is a nice man grandma. You told me stories about him and how he loved little children. He was so nice when he came to get me. I was sleeping and when I woke up he was right beside me. It is a wonderful place where he took me. The sun is shining. And grandma, he has a circle of gold around his head. He told me that I was to come with him and he would take care of me forever. He said that you would be okay grandma, once you knew I was safe with him.

I know you were looking forward to my first Christmas. Mommie was so excited to have you and grandpa come over to our house for dinner and we had lots of presents to open. The tree was the prettiest one I have ever seen. All the pretty lights and balls hanging on the ends, but Mommie said I mustn’t touch them. She said I had been a very good boy and Santa was going to bring me lots of presents. I am sorry I won’t be there to open them. I know that you will miss me. This man said that there were lots of presents where I was going and that a lot of people would be there to take care of me.

Great grandma and grandpa will be waiting for me when I get there. The nice man said that he would take me right to them so that I could meet them and get to know them.

Grandma, I will miss you so much. I know how much you loved me and I know your arms will ache not being able to give me hugs and kisses. I will miss them too. But grandma, don’t worry the nice man said that he would give me your hugs and kisses for the rest of eternity until you get to be here with me. I will wait for you grandma, but I know that it will seem like a long time to you before you get here.

Grandma, I know that the snow will forever make you sad, but I want you to know that I thought the snow was so pretty. The big fluffy snowflakes were just like little butterflies swirling around our heads. I wanted to touch them and hold them in my hands but they wouldn’t stay. Grandma those snowflakes, the fluffy big wet ones that land on your face and melt all wet are my kisses to you. So when it is snowing and you are outside and a big snowflake lands on your face all wet think of me and know that I sent you a kiss.

The nice man here said that I could ask that you sing to me. Just like you did when I was living with you and you held me in your arms. You would sing me to sleep with my head resting on your shoulder. It felt so good and I knew I was your best boy and you loved me oh so much. Whenever I hear you sing grandma, I will know that you have wrapped me in your arms and are squeezing me tight. Your voice will be like a cocoon of love keeping me forever close to your heart.

Grandma, I am getting good at walking now. I can walk from chair to chair and around people just like a big boy. I knew you would be pleased when I walked to you and held up my hands so you could pick me up and snuggle me under your chin. I will always remember how warm and safe I felt there with you. Someday grandma we will be together you and I and we can do all the things that we never got to do. The nice man is here now grandma and he said it is time for me to go with him. And grandma He told me to tell you his name is Jesus.

I will love you forever.

Seth

XOXOXOXO
