Even children build shells to protect themselves.
Fortress
by Vivian Gilbert Zabel

Silent child locked inside a shell,
Seemingly uncaring, unmoved
When inside a frightened fury
Beats a frantic tattoo
Aching to break through.

The cool, aloof facade protects
The tender, hidden self
That poking, prodding spears
Of hurful words, of hate
Would puncture and deflate.
