All too soon, autumn turns to winter.
Autumn Won’t You Stay a While?
by Marilyn Mackenzie

Autumn leaves

The beauty of autumn is seen in the distance.

It starts quietly, one leaf suddenly appearing bright yellow.
Other leaves join in the excitement, donning new colors too.
Bright reds, oranges and yellows appear everywhere;
Along with bright leaves, come chilly nights.

The beauty of autumn is seen in the distance.
Along with bright leaves, come chilly nights;
Bulky sweaters replace lighter ones, then jackets.
Hot cider and hot cocoa replace iced tea drinks.
Lovers snuggle in front of fireplaces.

The beauty of autumn is seen in the distance.
Lovers snuggle in front of fireplaces
Sad that the beauty mustn’t stay, will disappear...
As leaves turn to brown and gather to be swept away,
And harsher, colder winds begin to blow.

Soon, the beauty of winter will be seen in the distance.
As high mountaintops don beautiful peaks of white snow,
In the depths of the valley, starkness will remain
At that time between autumn and winter,
As brown leaves decay and harsh winds blow.
