The Noise

A noise woke me. I was having such a nice dream; I was at a party! So, waking up actually irritated me. As I lay there, wondering what noise had woken me, all I could hear was silence.

I must be dreaming still. The clock said twelve. the middle of the night, why would I be so wide awake. Plus, I couldn’t remember what the sound was that woke me. Suddenly it occurred to me that it might not have been outside.

At that thought, a chill ran up my spine. The noise could have been in my apartment! Did I lock the door? I do forget sometimes. Slowly I sat up. Still no more noise. Thinking I should check the door lock so I could relax, I quietly slipped out of my bed. And then I heard another noise.

This noise was definitely in my apartment. I froze. Reaching for my phone I tiptoed into the bathroom and quietly shut, and locked the door. Then I called the police. The woman told me to stay where I was two police officers would come over. I practically forgot to breathe.

The door was locked. They had to break the lock to get in. Then they quickly checked the whole apartment. And then, the noise of them checking room to room, turned into laughing. They called me out and showed me the perpetrator.

A kitten had snuck in, probably when I had the door open bringing in groceries. She apparently hid when giant me came in. But later, she was probably hungrier than scared. She was looking for food.

I got the lock fixed, and the kitten stayed. I named her Midnight, I’d forgotten how nice it was to live with a friend. Six years later she’s still my sweetest friend.
