“What does this mean?”

They’re words Honey. They all mean different things.

“Well, this one,” Maggie pointed.

“That word is ‘because’.”

“Is it like a bumble bee?”

“No, Honey, it’s not from bees. It means the reason, the why. You know how sometimes I tell you to do something, like pick up your toys, and you say ‘why?’ And then I say ‘because’ it’s too messy, or they might get broken.”

“Oh…”

“How about this one?” she pointed to sore.

“That word is about a feeling; it means a boo boo.”

“Who has a boo boo?”

“Well, you did Honey. Remember when you threw up yesterday? That was your tummy having a boo boo. Your tummy didn’t feel good, and it didn’t want to take care of that food you ate so it made you throw up. That’s why you couldn’t go to school yesterday.

“But my tummy is happy today…”

“Yes, and that’s why I’m sending this note with you to school. You need to give it to Miss Reynolds so she knows what happened.”

“What if she can’t read yet?”

“I think she can. It’s something you learn in school. You’ll probably start learning pretty soon! Maybe Miss Reynolds will help you start.”

“I’ll ask her! And you can help me too because you already know how, right?”

“Absolutely!”

“I can write my name…”

“Yes, and when you see your name, you usually know it’s your name. That’s reading! See you have already started learning to read!”

“Woopie! So, what are these words?” Maggie pointed to another sentence on the note.

“Ah, just some more things about school…”

“Oh, OK” she jumped up, ready to go.

Mom took a breath, those words actually said “I don’t know how you put up with twenty, four-year-olds all day, every day!!!”
