“Do you need help?”

“No. thank you.”

“Those are very lovely; a little big for you… Are you looking for something for someone else?”

“No… How do you know what size?”

“We have a chart and a tape measure in the rest room. If it’s for you, you could go in and measure yourself. I could help if you like, or there are instructions on the wall.”

“Thank you, I’ll try it.”

Five minutes later: “Can you help me?”

They got the measurements and found the size.

“Are you looking for something for every day, or some special occasion?

“I think… every day. My Dad doesn’t know much about girl things. I thought maybe I could find out myself. I notice all the girls in my class have started wearing them.”

“I can help. It sounds like you need every day bras. I’ll show you what we have. You can try a few on, see what’s comfortable.”

“They’re comfortable?”

“If you get the best ones for you, your own body, they can be very comfortable. I take it you don’t have a mom around?”

“She died six years ago.”

“I’m so sorry. I can help you.”

Later that day Jane showed her new bras to her dad. “Oh Honey! I should have helped you!”

She laughed! “You don’t know anything about bras! The lady in Begums helped me. Her name is Andrea. She was really nice.”

Dad went out of his way the next day to find the lady in Begums, he wanted to thank her. They ended up going to lunch together. The first date in a relationship that ended in marriage two years later.

Jane always thought it was funny when told people she got a new mother in an underwear store. Mostly, they thought she was nuts.
