And, Oops

“Look, it’s a deer!” Andy whispered, but a little loudly.

As Jeff looked the deer picked up its head and stared at them. “Shhh! You’ll scare it away!” Jeff said, really whispering. “Let’s just watch and see what it does.”

The boys stood stock still. The deer stared toward them another minute, and then apparently decided it was safe. It turned its head and made a soft noise. Suddenly a whole herd of deer walked out of the trees!

Andy and Jeff froze even more. Now instead of worrying about scaring away the deer, they both started worrying about the whole herd coming after them!

Seriously whispering now Andy said, “What should we do?”

“Stand still!” Jeff whispered back, “Blend in with the trees!”

The whole herd started wandering, eating things off the ground and making quiet, but audible noises, apparently talking to one another. The boys stood stock still and just watched.

After a few minutes, they started getting more nervous. The whole herd was slowly moving, right in their direction. Andy started to talk, but one deer immediately popped up its head and was looking right at where they stood. Andy shut up, then slowly moved his hand over his mouth and quietly said, “They don’t look friendly.”

Doing the same thing, Jeff said, “You just scared them. Shhhh! This is so cool!!!”

“I think it’s creepy,” Andy said, “They’re scaring me.”

“They’re more scared of us than we are of them.”

“But we’re just kids…”

“We’re bigger than a wolf, and wolfs could kill them. They don’t know we’re friendly.”

“Wow, that’s true…” Andy said, forgetting to whisper.

Suddenly all the deer fled! In seconds it went from a herd of deer before them, to an empty forest.

“Nice work, you jerk!” Jeff said.

“Oops…”
