Best Birthday Ever

“OK,” Mom said, “let’s wrap Daddy’s present, then we’ll hide it till after supper tomorrow.”

“After supper tomorrow?”

“Yes! After he gets home from work, we’ll surprise him, then light the candles and give him this present!”

“Surprise? It’s his birthday…”

“Yes, but he still has to work.”

“And wait till after supper?” Jake asked, a bit unhappily.

“Well, that’s what we usually do…”

“I got my birthday presents when I woke up in the morning.”

“Well, you don’t have to get up and go to work…”

“We could wake him up earlier…”

“Huh, I guess... Last year you were happy to do it after supper.”

“Last year I was a little kid, I’m four now!”

“Oh, well… OK, we can wake him up early and give him his present, but no cake till supper…OK?”

“No cake till supper?!”

“Even Dad would say that. He has to work all day; he needs a good breakfast. We could make him a special breakfast though…

“Can I?”

“If you want… but don’t say a word today. To make it a surprise, you can’t tell him about it?”

“OK!” off he ran. Mom smiled, thinking of Dad getting Crispy Tots for breakfast. But, better than cake for breakfast!

The next morning, she got up early to wake Jake up, and got a surprise. Jake was already up! Not only that, he had made Dad’s breakfast too! He was so excited!

A bit nervous about it, Mom went and checked. Round crackers, with peanut butter and jelly, all around the edge of a plate with fruit in the center, and a tall glass of orange juice. All laid out on a tray already, with silverware, and napkins too.

That was the day they both knew Jake would eventually be a chef. Best birthday ever!
