Get Together

I needed groceries. Worse, I needed something they didn’t carry at the close grocery store. I considered ordering online, and will in the future… but I needed this ingredient quickly, or I’d have to come up with something else for my girls get together. I don’t know how to cook anything else… My older sister was the one who cooked with Mom. I was clean-up. To this day I am greatly know by friends and family as a great house keeper, and a terrible cook… They think it’s funny. The only thing I learned to cook was Grammie’s Chocolate Cake. Fortunately, everybody loves it. I’d have to drive over to Baileys.

I knew the way, though it was many neighborhoods, and a long stretch of woods. The woods were nice, just getting into turning from green to all the colors of fall. I pulled over at one spot, and gathered some lovely, now vivid red, leaves for my centerpiece. Then stopped two more times adding yellows and orange. I could already see the centerpiece in my mind! Unfortunately, I couldn’t find the ingredient in the store. Finally finding out it was ‘coming soon,’ not soon enough, but soon…

I drove home, stopping for a couple more bunches of leaves. I could see the centerpiece in my mind already and couldn’t wait to get started! Unfortunately, but absolutely normal for me... I’d forgotten all about the cake. Remembering it in the morning while I was admiring my centerpiece, my centerpiece of emptiness.

I rushed to the nearby store! Grabbed cookies and muffins and the last small cake they had. Green frosting! But actually, next to the colored leaves, it made a statement. The “Coffee” went well. Nobody even asked about my cake. Oddly, that made me sad… but, not too sad…
