Why is Hell on Earth? |
HELLO NEAR TH'ERE I was tempted by the Devil, Who dwells beneath our feet; Presented poison choices, That I drank in fair deceit. Corrupting mortal senses, To provoke once lucid mind; Parlay knavish bargains, For a soul to pay in kind. Pray a god that made us, Concede to love us so; But condemn us to abide with, His exiled ghastly foe. Decreed the land we live on, Was neighbour to his lair; Subterranean and tyrant, A malevolent au-pair. Why send a child so naked? To a garden vast and cold; Near fires of hell alluring, Where accords exchange for gold. So I sat in Satans parlour, On throne with edges charred; And marked my sanguine pledges, With insouciant regard. The fault was self inflicted, And Lucifer so wise; His advocate assured me, The Devil never lies. Now two score years in future, The injunction absolute; My charge is here upon me, Though it’s just a short commute. If the weapon that’s contingent, To repel indentured woe; Is a faith to just believe it, I’m afraid my answers, No! Why is it incumbent? On I that hast not seen; A deity, so fickle, Crave love or spurned will lien. So my failing is your making, The truth is what I see; But I do believe in demons, They have shown themselves to me. |
