Sometimes being dessert is best.

I saw her for the first time one stormy night. Isn’t that the way all stories like this start?

Well, for me it is true. She seemed to appear from nowhere. Just a shadow at first. I sat in the pub waiting for the rain to end. When she walked in the door. Wearing a trench coat and her hair was soaking wet. Even though her makeup had run because of the rain, it was easy to see she didn’t need it to be beautiful.

The pub was busy because of the rain. But I couldn’t help but look at the specimen of a woman. All wet and dissembled. She seemed to look at me as if I was the only person in the room. I didn’t just see her, I could feel her presence. Being drawn to her, I had to move in her direction. The bar tinder offered her a small bar towel to draw her hair and face.

She looked at me as I drew closer. A smile unlike any I have seen before blessed her face. She really was a sight of beauty. She looked at me as if I was the only person in the room. As I approached, I could only see her deep blue eyes and red ruffled hair. And her smile. Her beauty captivated me. No one else existed in those few moments. Everything else became a dream of blurred background conversations and glass clinking.

I wake in a strange room. My vision was fuzzy at first. Then I could see that I was in a hospital room. An IV plugged into my left arm. A machine that was beeping fast and flashing a red light. But how did I get here? My head ached, and I was hungry. What had happened? The last thing I remembered was the pub. Then I remembered Meredith. That’s her name, Meredith. I took a deep breath, and the beeping stopped and the light turned green.

“Mr. Davies you are awake,” came a male’s voice. “You know, we thought we lost you there for a bit.”
Then I saw Meredith. Her hair was a golden red, a smile to die for, and eyes those blue eyes. Her pale skin was now pink. She approached the bed, reaching out with her hand. I reached back finder her touch cold. But I didn’t care. I was holding her hand.
“Mr. Davies,” the doctor I guess, “you have a rear blood type, Rh-null. If you had lost anymore blood, we would not have been able to save you.” The doctor continued, “We will need to watch you for a couple more days. You should be fine after you eat and recover some.”
“Thank you, doctor.” Meredith said.

Then she turned to me and smiled. That is when I seen her teeth. The two small but visible canines. “I will get him healthy and insure he stays that way,” she said.

That was the last time I needed to go to the hospital. Both Meredith and I have learned my limits and come to love each other for it. I am sorry for the others that don’t make it. But, I am okay with being her loving dessert.
